I'm hoping one of the much older heads on here can confirm this what I read on another forum....

'When Arsenal got to the 1971 FA Cup final 'The Big Match' on LWT (ITV version on MOTD for the London area) ran a competition to try and bolster Arsenal's vocal support knowing that Liverpool would easily outsing them at Wembley. They ran a competition to make a new Arsenal song the fans could sing. Take up/efforts were so poor Jimmy Hill (yes that very same one) made this verse up;

Good old arsenal
We're proud to say that name
And while we sing this song
We'll win the game

It became and still is one of their main songs to this day. A song publically made up by somebody with no Arsenal affiliation, says a lot about their fanbase.....'

Is this true?

Yes - all true. They were about to win the Double and they had no club song - remember we had 'Glory, glory Hallelujah' and it sort of stuck in their throats.

I remember the season after when they came to the Lane and singing the Jimmy Hill ditty and the Park Lane replying with;

They're the biggest w*ankers in the game.
