I’ve seen this happening over the last 5-6 seasons. I imagine it’s because they don’t want the opposition to know what they are talking about but jeez, this is football, are they really expecting then opposition to employ lip readers? Or perhaps they Al have bad breath?

It's not just the opposition it's the press.

I think it was a lip reader, possibly watching on TV - I forget, who complained about John Terry's on field outburst, and the result of that was JT being suspended and he lost the England captaincy.
England manager capello sided with Terry and had to be 'resigned'.

So the lesson players learned that day was to always cover their mouths when they are talking/shouting on the field, just in case they are caught saying something racist, homophobic or worse. Problem solved. Tick.

Its the media to blame that we find there are 'racist, homophobic or worse' people on the pitch.
