Interestingly, the first part describes Mason far more, but the general consensus on here was that they didn't want him involved.

You also don't have to be in the coaching team to mentor or give advice. Danny Rose has proved that.
I think that the general consensus was that he wasn't ready to be first team head coach and rightfully so IMO but in terms of having him involved in some coaching capacity, I absolutely can't see why not.

Why's it disappointing, though?

He hasn't got any coaching badges, and seemed to be a token gesture in Jose's team, and apparently there's no worse fate than having an ex-player take the big job as his first, so there's no valid reason for him to be involved really.
Apparently, he has coaching badges!

Just because this guy Cathro didn’t do well as a manager, doesn’t mean he’s not a good coach. Was good enough for Rafael Benitez so he’s good enough for me.

Cathro didn't do to well when he was head coach at Hearts.
I'm surprised to see him go back to assistant
Wasn’t a job for the boys at hearts. He had no chance. Has been a very good assistant, some coaches are better as assistants and not meant to be managers.

Agree.

Added to this he‘a changed his mind on and off about it he wants to be a coach or not, might just not be for him.

Often assistants take the step up but realise it's a totally different job and then should step back down. Sadly lots of assistants keep trying and failing. Sometimes you've got to realise that you're best as an assistant.
Peter principle in action.

Chris Powell is still with the academy - the last paragraph of the Academy coaching update from the club states:

“We’re delighted with the overall structure that we have in place and with the help of our wider Academy coaching team, including Chris Powell, Wayne Burnett, Paul Bracewell and Bradley Allen, we believe we’re able to provide the best possible environment for our young players to thrive.”

I loved Ledley as a player but it was a tick box exercise appointing him in the first place.

Another one of the fall back options Levy carries out when shit isn't going right. He appointed Poyet, Freund and then Ledley to try and get the fans on their side. I'm kinda of surprised he hasn't given Nuno another ex spurs player to work with.
Where you hearing he was only appointed as a tick box exercise?

Jose said it was his decision not Levy’s and Jose doesn't strike me as the type of guy to let other people appoint his coaches, nor do anything just for the sake of it.

Has he? He started studying to be a coach and realised he wasn't ready for the work involved at that time, but even then said it was something he wanted to return to when ready. Here is a quote from 2016.

“At the time I didn’t realize how much the coaching can take over you,” Spurs’ former captain said. “I’m aware of what managers say – you don’t sleep, and this and that – and I feel like I had a taste of that and I wasn’t ready.

“I felt if I was going to do it, I needed to do it properly. I did enjoy it, especially working with young players. I’ve been in that position, a kid trying to come through the youth team. It’s something I will go back into but only at the right time.”

Since starting his coaching role under Mourinho he has reaffirmed his commitment to continue coaching. Here is a quote from April.

"Making that transition [to coaching] was something that I had to do. I've been thrust into it, ended up in the deep end and that's given me a whole new confidence. Now I'll have to go back, retrace my steps and do the badges to enable me to continue on this path.

I've learned so much this season that it's probably taken me way past the badges stage, but I've got to do them, of course."

So it appears he has always wanted to and planned to coach, he just realised he wasn't ready when he first retired from playing, unless you have evidence to the contrary?

Re: Ledley - I think it’s easy to read too much into a few quotes over the course of several years. Actions speak louder than words, and if King really wanted to get into coaching, he would have done his badges by now.

It’s a difficult life-style, particularly for a lower level coach, so there is nothing wrong in thinking that path is not for you.

Just heard that years back he had quite a few chances to coach but turned them down to keep doing his ambassador role, he then more recently as per your quotes decided he wanted to give coaching a go but the fact he’s now gone back to ambassador role rather than really push to stay on as a coach or join up and coach one of the youth teams or even move to another club to coach says to me he’s still not 100% about it.

I also knew some people who’ve worked at the club and who spoke to Ledley at events and pre season etc and he just loves the club and was just very happy doing the ambassador role.

Obviously the likely thing is Nuno would like his own staff around him so no space for King at this point so let’s see how things go over the coming years if King stays in ambassador role or pushes to move to another coaching supporting role.

As much as I love Ledley I think it’s important for Nuno to have his own staff around him to try and stamp his authority on proceedings.

King said: "I've learned so much this season that it's probably taken me way past the badges stage, but I've got to do them, of course."

So could it be they have kept him out of the set-up for now to enable him to get his badges done this season?

Just having a look at the current job opportunities at the club, and we're recruiting for a first team fitness coach. I remember when Nuno's staff was confirmed most people felt it was a person short, and there we go

Not really. The club employ a plethora of S&C coaches across the Academy and 1st team

More than likely, one of them either got promoted, left for another role or we're just adding another coach.
