From the "Is Harry Tactically Good Enough" thread ...

I was thinking this exact thing when I watched the substitution on Saturday of Lennon for Pav.

This does go to show you what we lost when we got rid of Comolli

You were thinking that under Random and Damo we spent nearly £85m in just two windows? That's almost as much as Jol spent in six, and more than Harry's spent in four.

Think a little more…

You want us to sign Bales PE teacher? Fair enough.

I agree that DC is bigging himself up a bit, but why shouldn't he? He helped sign him so give him some of the credit.

Thats fair enough, I just think the point being made is if he wants the praise for Bale, Assou-Ekotto and the rest, he should also be prepared to take the flak for player who did not make the grade like Gilberto.

I think he did a good job for us, he got in some good players but also some bad ones, with DoF that will always be the way. Do I think he was unlucky to lose his job as DoF? No I don't. Ramos was his man and when that didn't work out he had to share in the blame. Would I have him back as a scout? You bet.

Comolli was good at spotting potential but had no idea how to balance a team in the present.

We needed a blend of youth and experience which he failed to provide

Also he rarely took into consideration a players temperament before signing them

Kaboul, Taarabt, Ghaly, Boateng etc were all mentally immature and not ready for 1st team action

Completely agree with everything you say and personally I'd love to read an interview with DC where he says 'I signed some real duffers' when I was at Spurs' :grin:

As I point out every time the topic of Damien Comolli arises - he wasn't sacked for the player signings he made (IMHO he bought us the basis of a very, very good squad,and I said so at the time when others were demonising him). He was sacked because:
A) It was at his insistence that BMJ was sacked;
B) It was at his insitence that Wandery Ramos was hired;

I would also point out, as I did at the time, that he bought us the basis of a very, very good squad BUT his primary failing in terms of squad building was not in the players he bought but in those he didn't (or, to be more exact, in the positions he failed to cover adequately). We were a joke in the 'enforcing' side of central midfield, for instance. 'Arry spotted that immediately, and went out and bought The Sergeant, no matter the cost, as soon as he could (and, for all of those slagging Wilson now, they should realise that this was probably the single most important signing in or resurrection). He also 'allowed' himself to be completely out manoeuvred by Red Nose Ferguson leaving us frighteningly light on the 'striker' front.

Spot on and well said. It was absolutly criminal that after achieving two fifth-placed finishes, he spend a hell of a lot of money and didn't improve the first eleven one bit. He bought players, expensive players at that, in positions which were not an issue and did not plug the glaring holes in the team, or novices who were not ready. He then left us with our fourth choice striker as our main man, with a mere child as our second striker.

We went backwards in his time with us because of his insistance on looking ahead and sell-on value (Woodgate being the exception that proves the rule-great buy, but another nod towards not buying enough experience when we needed it). He could not see what was right in front of his face. Harry could, thats why Wilson, JD, Robbie(to an extent) all had to come in to balance out everything.

Commoli made sone great signings, but on the whole, he is a prick that nearly royally fucked everything up.

And thats without any mention of the Jol embarrasment.
