Not good enough for a team who want to compete in the top 4-6 places.

Poor in the build up phase, doesn’t provide much creativity at all and generally just lacks quality.

Alex Scott has a far higher ceiling and is 4 years younger. Would be very disappointed if we sign Gallagher. Not good enough.

Luckily I think we will get priced out, let’s hope so anyway.

I can see the appeal, young, HG, full of energy and you'd have two central players in him and Maddsion who would both have an eye for a goal, but he's also really not a player that fills me with the greatest of excitement either. Looks a little too hustle and bustle a lot of the time from what I've seen.

Still not sure I can see us taking a player from Chelsea either.

For me it is a definite No. for Ange, he needs his head examined even if he was going for half that alleged figure. Crystal Palace and Wolves level

50m?! No chance we spend that on anything other than a defender this window and even then I doubt we would spend that on a CB
I can’t see them holding out for 50 mil for him. They probably want rid and I can’t imagine there is much interest if any at that price range. I don’t see any other big club wanting him. If he leaves it would probably be more like £30-40 mil including add ons.

Depending on the interest elsewhere, it's possible they price us out but sell him for a lower fee to someone like Wolves.

No idea if we are in for him

no idea of the money it would actually take to get him

but to be completely honest….he is a good player and i think many will be surprised by how good he actually is if we were to sign him.

although I’d still prefer Alex Scott.

Problem is we are around that level - Kane had papered over the cracks of this squad for 3/4 seasons now!

This is my view. We have to consider where our limited funds will make the biggest difference, and that has to be at CB

Gallagher is a good player, but not 50m worth, and I don’t see him getting in the side ahead of Bissouma, Maddison or Bentancur.

If we’ve taken a view we’ll sell one of Skipp or Sarr and if we can get him for 25/30 and he’s prepared to fight…(lots of ‘ands’ there)…maybe.

Otherwise, surely we have bigger priorities

I agree with all of that but one of his best strengths, for those who watched him at palace, was getting on the end of things and scoring goals with his runs into the box. Isn’t that exactly what Ange wants from one of his eights? I can see the merits in him with being hg too.

Personally I liked him at Palace. Difficult or near impossible to judge anyone at Chelsea last season because of the circus that was.

I cannot claim to have in-depth knowledge of his attributes, so this is a genuine question:

If those in favour of trying to get him are correct re his attributes; why would Poch let him go? Sounds to me like a very useful player in a Poch squad?
Chelsea is facing serious FFP problems and needs to sell ex-academy players who are on their books for nothing to generate profits.

Based on their recent activity you'd like to think Chelsea would accept multiple year instalments for any transfer.

Think they are paying some over 7-8 years!

99% are paid over multi year. They're not paying fees over 7/8 years, they're paying players over 7/8 years to help with FFP, but they're closing that loophole.

The article is speculative on the price. Besides I’m not sure mike McGrath is very good on us. Last summer every player he linked us to went on to sign a new contract with their club!

Article:

Tottenham have Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher in their sights as Ange Postecoglou’s squad starts to take shape ahead of the new season.

Spurs are looking at midfield options as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been targeted by Atletico Madrid and clubs in Germany, with Gallagher emerging as a contender to compete for a place under Postecoglou.

The new manager at Tottenham has brought in James Maddison, has Tanguy Ndombele returning from his Napoli loan and young midfielders in Oliver Skipp and Pape Matar Sarr, with Rodrigo Bentancur recovering from a serious knee injury. Hojbjerg was the mainstay of Tottenham’s midfield last season and his departure would need a player to come in with the box-to-box energy of Gallagher.

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is an admirer of Gallagher and a move will come down to whether he is deemed a player who can be sold this summer. There has been previous interest from Newcastle United, who have since signed Sandro Tonali in that position, and he has been linked with Aston Villa.

Gallagher could cost up to £50 million in the current market, reflecting his resale value at 23 and because he is a homegrown talent. After coming through the ranks of Chelsea’s Academy at Cobham, he broke into the first team last season after loans at Charlton, Swansea, West Brom and Crystal Palace.

Should a deal progress, it would be a rare transfer between the two London rivals, who have traditionally left each other’s players alone. The last first-team deal between them was Carlo Cudicini, who was granted a free transfer to Spurs in 2009 as a thank you for his service at Chelsea.

Chelsea have already sold Mateo Kovacic to Manchester City, Ruben Loftus-Cheek has departed for AC Milan and N’Golo Kante to Saudi Arabia, with the club in the market for an additional central midfielder to partner Enzo Fernandez.

Gallagher would be competing for a first-team place at Chelsea if he stays. He made 35 appearances in the Premier League last season, although 17 were as a substitute. It was during his time at Palace when he was first called up by England, earning the first of his seven caps and earning a place in the World Cup squad last year.

Postecoglou spoke of changes in his squad when he took his first press conference last week. He also has Manor Solomon arriving as a free transfer although he will play in a more advanced position. “In terms of the squad I think it’s fair to say the reason I’m here is because the club are seeking change,” said the Aussie coach. “That usually means a change in personnel. I have to work with the certainties I have and tick off the uncertainties one by one.”

The drawback in signing Gallagher is that it will make it harder to give highly promising players like Devine and Sarr (and, more speculatively White, Craig and Abbott) a route to the first team.

We are told the aim is revolution this year followed by evolution and evolution requires time, patience and chances for new players to emerge and prosper.
