Personally I'd think this would be a good signing for us. Ange has his eyes on more than just competing for top 4. We need serious quality depth in midfield and Hojbjerg wants out. For me he's a no brainer at £40m. Proven homegrown quality that can play in all 3 midfield positions.

Chelsea need to sell him for FFP and because Poch plays him every week they know there won't be many clubs he'd willingly lead for. They can't palm him off on someone like Palace now.

Homegrown quota is looking to be an issue for us. Supposedly Everton wanted £80-100m for Braithwaite! Value wise you probably won't find a fairer deal for a HG player.

If a deal happens however it happens late. The early return of Bentancur has helped here.

Personally I think midfield options of...

Maddison
Kulusevski
Bentancur
Sarr
Gallagher
Bissouma

Lo Celso/Skipp

...would be excellent. For me that has a bit of everything and would be enough for a title contending team.

If we could build that kind of depth everywhere we'll be on to something.

When you are building a squad sometimes the deals don't always arise in the order of most importance.
Now that would be midfield depth would be mouthwatering.

If we could replicate that in all positions Ange could challenge on all fronts for us.

Why would we help Chelsea with their FFP issues by making a signing does not improve our first eleven

Because there is no “first eleven”. The idea of a first or best eleven is a myth. Skipp, Hojbjerg and Royal at CB is what happens when you have a first eleven.

With respect, the outcome you refer to is also what happens when your squad is imbalanced.

I'm not against buying him, I think he's a good player, but I'd argue that 8 (which he kind of is) is a fairly well stocked position for us. Bentancur, Sarr, GLC and Maddison at a push can play there.

Do we have that kind of depth elsewhere? I'd argue not.

Good player, and if the manager wants him great. But your post argues for further reinforcements at CB and DM, as much as it does getting Gallagher. I'm good either way on this one.

It's a close call but I'd probably rather have a 6, than another 8.
Gio recently said it's his favoured position, Sarr and Rodders are great there and at the moment, we've still got PEH. With Madders and Deki also able to fill in if needed, with that maybe leaving more playing time for Donley?

Bents is a probably the only one we've got who can cover Bissouma but for me, that's a bit of a waste of his talents.

I think the 6 role is probably the best place for, what did you call him? "Rodders"?

His best attribute is his ability to take the ball under pressure, and distribute it - and the 6 is where that particular skill set is needed most. The 8 kind of looks for spaces to exploit, but is less often under immediate close pressure.

The 6 also lets Bentancur direct a lot of the play in the attacking end as well, from behind play, while Maddison orchestrates things closer and in the box.

Bentancur can play the 8 role, but that wastes a lot of his unique talents.

Its just annoying the 3 players missing now because they all impact what we can do. Bissouma out means Bentancur has to play as the 6, Sarr out means we have to play Hojbjerg or Skipp until Maddison returns (which would maybe allow Lo Celso to play as an 8), Son out means we have to play Kulusevski in the front 3 so Lo Celso has to be the 10 for now. No doubt when all are back we will look a lot better but we definitely need to upgrade on Hojbjerg either with a 6 or an 8. I just think the 8 is such a hard working role in this team that we're better to have extra cover in that position.

Yeah, maybe but I do like Bentancur breaking through midfield and towards the box. I think he's got goals in him too.

Bentancur is able to carry the ball really quickly too which means he is very effective as both the 6 and 8.

Beta the press and he can get it into Maddison and co quickly.

Gallagher won't happen this window and could be long drawn out in the summer if at all.
Ederson at Atalanta looks a good alternative and a real prospect but the rumors are Man Utd are trying to sign him now.
If we could move Hjobjerg on I think Ederson would be a real smart signing at euro 30-35m.

I really struggle to see this happening. Poch obv really wants him to stay and Gallagher himself will want to stay it’s only the owners that will be thinking of the financial aspect. Ultimately tho the club owners can try to push him out but if he’s still getting picked by Poch and is captaining the side then why would he accept our offer. Yes they could put pressure on Poch to drop him but it could get very messy. Beyond that I don’t see Chelsea coming down much in their valuation as they would want to raise as much as possible from him.

To me I feel the ITK links to Ederson make a lot more sense at this point. He will probably be a good chunk cheaper, we already have dealings with Atalanta and the fact they are moving for a young CM makes me wonder if things could already be happening behind the scenes. Atalanta have never been afraid of playing youth players in important positions and if they rate Jordan James highly, which im sure they do as he’s considered an exciting prospect, then I have no doubt they would comfortably put him right in despite only being 19.

Any move for Gallagher will probably drag out throughout the window and could end up in disappointment considering his position in the squad and Ange seems very keen to get our business done as early as possible. Whilst Gallagher might be the ideal, i wouldn’t be surprised if we do the same thing we did with Tadibo.

We obviously still have PEH which makes it less of a priority at present but I’m sure both he and us would like to get him moved on as soon as possible.

Just like in the summer, this seems like a surreal connection. Perhaps even more now, given how much Poch has utilized him so far this season.

Like in the summer, I am still very much for this move. Let's say PEH and Skipp left, we need another midfielder for sure. The fact he is homegrown is also a big bonus. Plus, he really is the perfect Ange midfielder - capable of playing all three positions. Particularly excellent in the 8 role.

I also don't adhere to the notion that he 'wouldn't even be a starter' at Spurs. I don't get the impression that's what Ange is going for: A settled XI that plays week in, week out. He wants a set of swiss army knives that he can deploy depending on the opposition.

Is Sarr or Biss or Lo Celso or Benta all better than him? That's subjective. But I do know, he players at a higher quality level than PEH and Skipp. And is far more versatile.

So, I definitely see why he is complimentary to what the coach needs. However, it's seems strange that Chelsea would not only sell him to a rival, but also undermine their coach. Then again, their new ownership group a somewhat logically-challenged.

Right but there's also the fact that we have 5-6 better players in midfield. His versatility would definitely be useful though.

For me it's a question of whether we can spend that money better in an area where we have more pressing needs.

Once we have a full squad then Bentancur, Bissouma or GLC can play/cover the 8 position. Think we are lightest in the 6 role.
Agree with this but we are also going to lose Dier and maybe Skipp could leave soon! We need to think ahead and get some home grown players in! Not 100% Dier counts as home grown FYI as he spent his youth in Portugal!
