Because we need a squad not a team.

Because Skipp, PEH and GLC are likely gone in the summer.

Because we'll be in Europe
And this is a player that will want to be a regular international player, and start every week. I just can’t see him wanting to be a squad player or us spending big money to be one. Even on his best day he’d be 5th in line to start. If he left in January he seriously risks his England chances due to us having 18 games left and our midfield is about to look the strongest it’s been once Bissouma and Sarr return.

I just don’t see how he’d want to come here over being a first name on team sheet for a West Ham/Palace/Brighton side or even wait till end of season and see if there’s a spot at Newcastle.

Can't see it. Everyone is going to be playing them right now because of the situation. Also just because a club is willing to put up what they are asking it doesn't mean Gallagher will actually want to go to them. It's one hell of a tightrope they are walking right now.

Totally agree. I think they're going to have to scramble to sell all of Chalobah, Broja, and Gallagher and still sweat it out.

Gallagher is the best of the three but is two days away from the 1 year left on contract territory - who's going to pay more than 30m in the Summer?

Broja and Chalobah have been meh and injured, yes on long-term deals, but can't really see anyone dropping insane cash on either IMO.

They MAY have 80-100m in player sales between the three and that could be generous.

I would play devils advocate and say, isn't that what we want from our squad though and for Ange to have selection headaches? There are many on here currently that do not think GLC, Skipp, or PEH will be in the long-term plans beyond this season, or shouldn't.

I personally don't care if we get Gallagher vs. some CM wonderkid or youngster. However, I selfishly personally want each position to have constant battles to determine who plays. Sarr has been absolutely fantastic, and my hope is that he only continues his upwards trajectory. But if we don't feel the need to challenge him or have sufficient cover in his position then the next best we can do is have someone like Skipp behind him IMO.

Colwell is another they could sell, Liverpool where previously interested, might get a decent £30-40m fee for him.

Lets say they get 15m a piece for Broja and Chalobah and 40m a piece for Gallagher and Colwell, that might just do it but you wouldn't wait till summer for all that, huge gamble.

How much do Chelski need to balance the books?
Nobody knows for sure, but Swiss Ramble said this:

Chelsea want a lot more than £40m for Gallagher (according to Lyall Thomas on SSN) and this fee is likely to be between £60-80m.

To play devil to your devil.

What has happened this season:

- Bentancur has come back from his worst injury in his career
- Maddison has come back from his worst injury in his career
- Bissouma has got two red cards in a season for the first time in his career
- Sarr got a minor injury just after Maddison got injured
- Bentancur got taken out by Matty Cash in his first start back from injury
- Sarr and Bissouma have been away to Afcon
- Lo Celso has picked up knocks, which in itself isn't surprising but has been timed when the above has been at it's worst

Sarr is not a DM or AM but a CM and the same goes for Gallagher. They are both all action, box-to box midfielders and have their engine as one of their main strenghts. Bentancur is a different type of player but his best position is arguably the same as both of them.

If we want to improve the squad in midfield we need someone who can play two positions (AM/CM like Lo Celso or CM/DM like Bentancur), IMO.

So a need to reduce by ~£100 million before July just to sneak under allowable losses for this period. Jeez, this could be interesting for a few years yet!
When does the summer transfer window open? I think it was 14th June this year - gives them two weeks to have a fire sale and make £200m+ profit on player sales (net of amortised value).....not a chance in hell, so perhaps they just plan to suck it up with a 10 point deduction?

I suspect the stronger adherence to the P&S rules may mean that transfer fees start to be a little more realistic and/or less transfers occurring.

It's not a 10 point deduction as standard. Pretty sure with everton it was 1 point for each X million over the limit

Why are Skipp and GLC 'likely gone in the Summer'? Gio is now happy here. I know he picks up a lot of injuries but he's a great squad option all the same. Skipp would walk over broken glass to stay here.

They have a couple more players they can sell to help with FFP. Lewis’s hall is on a season long lone at Newcastle, with an obligation of twenty-eight mil at the end of the loan if he plays x number of games. There is also Ian Maatsen who is on loan at Dortmund. Sooner or later though this should hopefully bite them.

Precarious though, all it takes is a twisted ankle/busted hammy etc and those 'x games' won't be met. They always seem to land on their feet though and Tom will be getting on his phone to his pals in sunnier climates to drum up trade. I wonder how much they are actually panicking about this.
