One of the principle reasons why we've not done better this season is our lack of consistency. Just look at the following:

Gomes: Many many good games but some inconsistent ones too
Benny: Probably our most consistent player until out injured
Daws: Several ups and downs during the season plus out injured 3 months
Gallas: Started slowly due to no pre-season and has become a consistent performer for most of the season
Charlie: Several ups and downs too. Had to be replaced by Hutton at one stage
Woody/Ledley: Very inconsistent through injuries.
Younes: Played well in several games only to be let down by injuries.
Sebbo: Played well on several occasions but has also been inconsistent overall
Luka: Started off well, was out through injuries and then little by little became very consistent over the last few month.
The Hudd: Forced out through injuries but has been an inconsistent season for him
JJ: Extermely inconsistent although has had a few very good games.
Sandro: Inconsistent to start but as the season wore on he took up the defensive M/F's job with aplomb.
Bale: Some good games in the league, some excellent ones in the Champions but overall an inconsistent season in part down to injuries.
Lennon: Some very good games, several average amd quite a few very inconsistent ones.
Wilson: Certainly not up to last years standards apart from the Milan game away
VDV; Brilliant start but ofen faded away during games, now getting back to his best.
Strikers: Consistently poor
'Arry: Some great games won, but overall hasn't seemed to fully understand squad rotation as well as his direct rivals.

Not hard to see why we haven't reached the dizzy heights of 4th place again without all round consistency, right ?
