Well, it looks like Antonio Conte has made his mind up about Giovani Lo Celso at Tottenham Hotspur. The Argentina international has enhanced his reputation in a major way since leaving Tottenham on loan in January.

I remember Modric being too weak
I remember media reports of him being too weak... Then I started watching him and quickly saw he had a low centre of balance and an awareness / first touch that would take him away from danger. One of those players who always looked to have more time on the ball without panicking.

But either way Modric is a very different type of midfielder to Lo Celso. Gio was supposed to add the creative spark for us (VDV is a better comparison from that era) but often hid away in games and didn’t take any risks.

Happy to see him enjoying his football again back in Spain let’s hope we get a decent fee for him that can go towards some creative attacking wingbacks.

I remember Modric being too weak
I was on holiday in Croatia the summer we signed Modric. When I speculated that he might have been too lightweight for the PL, the locals emphasised that he had the guts and tenacity to compensate for his slight build. I think those are the ingredients (so far) missing from Lo Celso's game.

Modric was and is another level of player though, with a much better passing range.

Glad that Lo Celso is doing well though as it means we should get some decent money for him.

Modric was too weak to play AM in the prem.
He had to drop deeper and then he showed his class.

Lo Celso is too weak in regards to control of the ball. Plenty of times he loses possession in tight spots when he's going to his right and has players around him.

It's because he doesn't have that ability to shift his body both ways. He doesn't have that low balance.

Modric could make up for his lack of body strength by being able to shift his body out of tight spots. He could move the ball any direction because his body is so agile and 360.

Lo Celso can only really do this on his left side and he doesn't have the upper body strength to compensate for this. Therefore he has to play as an AM, but to do that in the PL you need to either have upper body strength (Kukusevski) or balance to go both ways (Bernardo).

Conte is right

You have to remember Modric was sent to left wing because he couldn't handle CM. When he finally gained confidence on the left wing he was moved into the middle.

Lo Celso for me has had the exact same trajectory at Tottenham as Modric. The difference was Redknapp backed Modric.

Lo celso is such a weird player. He's quite good at everything but not actually good at anything.

Modric played in Bosnia as a Croatian teenager. If that doesn't toughen you up nothing will.
