But can we? This is the point.
Similar things were said when we sold Bale - "sell Elvis, buy the Beatles". The vast majority were of the opinion that, gutting though it was to lose such a great player, the team would actually be stronger as a consequence. Sadly not, as it turned out. If we sell Rose and buy some highly rated left back from Europe, there is no guarantee that he won't do a Soldado / Paulinho / Lamela on us. And there is no left back in the Premier League who we could buy who is currently playing better than Rose. So let's keep him.
I'm under no illusions that Danny Rose is a world class left back. But he should be one of the last players that we're looking to sell right now. Let's fix all the areas of the team that are going badly wrong before trying to upgrade one of the few areas of the team that is working relatively well. That's the only sensible way to proceed. It's about priorities.
Think Bale is a special player and cost Madrid £85m for a reason, Rose isn't irreplaceable. We already have Ben Davies who I think is a better prospect, so maybe wouldn't even need to replace as such, We could get a older more experienced pro in, or someone much younger.
Every transfer is a risk, like you've pointed out, but offers upwards of £10m for players don't come that often, is Rose performs badly next season and cant get a game due to Davies showing excellent form, his price will tumble City won't pay up and we end up selling to Sunderland for £6million.
