Sunderland want Darren Bent after showing Djibril Cisse the door

By Simon Bird 26/05/2009

Djibril Cisse became the first Sunderland star out of the door yesterday - as a £10million offer to sign him was scrapped.

Chairman Niall Quinn will concentrate on buying British this summer and is lining up a raid on Tottenham for Darren Bent, once he has a new boss in place.

Cisse's patchy form - 11 goals in 32 Black Cats appearances - scuppered a full-time switch from French club Marseille.

Quinn said: "We wish Djibril well and thank him for his contribution to the club."

He's my least favourite Spurs player since Tim Deadwood.

I know at times away from home he can be effective, but I just find his sheer lack of footballing ability so frustrating. I'll always remember him as a Rebrov or a Veron calibre balls up. I think he'll do well at Sunderland tbh, but he's never fitted the way we play.

The dressing room will be a happier place with him gone too.

Yeah, that comment about the dressing room being happier intrigued me too. Never heard anything about Bent being a disruptive influence.

I will not be heartbroken if Bent leaves but it's harsh to be so damning of his time at Spurs. He scored some important goals this season and actually has the ability to score away from home (are you listening JD?). When we first started to recover under Redknapp he was vital, away at Man City was a superb game for him.

If he goes I hope his replacement is very good, otherwise we might aswell keep him. I'm not his biggest fan but he is better than many give him credit for.

Crap. He was signed to score goals, and in the league this season he's done so at a rate that compares with the likes of Anelka and Torres—who are, of course, far superior all-round footballers, but in Torres' case at least that's what you pay the extra £10m for. But that's beside the point if he's doing what it says on the tin.

Cissé's form didn't scupper a return to Marseille, BTW; they think he's a ****, and the fans absolutely hate him. Think Ghaly, then multiply by a factor of about 100.

Why do we always end up talking about JJ

Now about Bent like him or not he has scored our goals this season but whats more impressive about this guy is the fact that he has remained professional even when the manager had a public pop at him. I've never heard anything about him moaning at not starting and when he comes on as a sub he looks like he wants to play.

Yes it is frustrating at times but there are alot worse out there!!

He'll score at least 20 at Sunderland, the way they play will suit him even if their service probably won't be as effective. He should be able to score plenty of the sitters that Jones and Cisse missed regularly.

Hopefully this puts pressure on the likes of West Ham rather than what we're aiming for.

He'll also play with Jones, not do his level best to ignore his existence. Good luck to him if this happens. Meanwhile, we'll muddle along with Rebrov—sorry, Pavlyuchenko.

He's not disruptive but he's not at all popular.

He's had quite big bust ups with King and Defoe and they were originally his two best mates at the club.

He was signed to replace Defoe on the bench. I don't think he is without merit, he just never been suited to the way we play. It was real lack of consideration on Comolli's part (and I usually defend Comolli)

Torres cost £3.5m more than Bent.

What is your basis for this statement? I'm in now way dismissing it. Just curious as to the evidence that supports this.

A little birdie in the last regime.

I think Jones an Bent will make an excellent partnership at Sunderland - they'll suit Sunderland's pressing and on-the-break style.

,

If true this could be a positive though, for example;

Ledley mate, you don't need another drink, let's go home now.

Jermain, stay away from danielle and chantelle, they are disease ridden and please be careful, I think you drive too fast and lend your cars to undesireables.

I dont understand why Bent receives so much criticism on here. Admitedly he is not pretty to watch, but he's effective and does what he was bought to do...score goals!

I dont know the stats but I'd be very surprised if any other striker at spurs this year matches his goals/minutes on the pitch ratio.
