I live in Edinburgh in the same area that Dave Mackay is from and I'm hearing that he's passed away.

A number of Scottish journo's now confirming this on Twitter.

Really puts the last week into perspective.

Never saw him play, but he was my dad's favourite player ever. Hopefully this isn't true :/.

Before my time but one of the legends that I read so much about when I first started being a Spurs fan. RIP

I never saw him play but Billy Nick rated him as the best. And that's good enough for me.

Thanks, big man, for playing such a huge part in making Tottenham Hotspur the great club that it is.

Spurs legend forever.

RIP

Never seen him play but his greatest is magnified by those I speak to who did and say 'if only we had a Mackay in our current side'. Says it all.

Derby and Hearts forums also discussing the news. So it looks as though it must be true.

My dad loved playing and training with him and rated him extremely highly. I've never had the pleasure to meet him but what a man and a talent he must have been to still be spoken about in such a manner decades after his playing days.

RIP

Devastated. Saw him towards end of his Spurs career, then met him in the Paxton Road before a game just a few years back. Asked my little lad for a bite of his burger. Bless him. R.I.P. big man

How sad. He will live on in our history. An absolute legend and one of our best ever players (so I'm told)

Met him once and he was an absolute gent.

Only recently changed my gif thingy to that famous picture of him that to me personified his leadership qualities. Saw him only once or twice right at the end of his career before he joined Derby but he was my old mum's favorite player, her also being a jock. If there is a heaven I can assure you my mother will be at the front of the queue that welcomes him ready to reunite him with our other past legends that now exist in spirit form only. RIP Dave, you'll always exist in the hearts and minds of us Spurs fans.

Im hoping it isn't true as it came from twitter

I been a big fan after hearing stories from local people and family.

Had he not broken his leg, they say we would be talking about a totally different spurs today.

Not only that despite being 34 he went on to win the league with Derby and probably after Clough if not with him, the biggest factor in changing Derby. Not to mention winning the League again as a Manager

I always hoped he would get see us win the CL we should of won in 62

If he has passed away, RIP to who some consider Tottenham's Greatest Ever Player
