Privileged to see him play lots of times. A giant in the game, met him at "Sir Bill's funeral i was in awe of this man, although not by any means big except for his barrel chest. Immense long throw, hard but fair in the tackle, rocket shot. Hard as nails. loved him as a Spurs great. RIP Dave.

As others have said, he was a true giant of the game and a real gentleman.

RIP Dave.

First time I saw him play at WHL, Sep 1963, and last time for Derby Jan 1970.

Was not able to see him play but have read about him and what he achieved in the game and how well respected he was by his team mates.

So influential for our double winning team and I imagine his character and influence would have done wonders for our current side.

Undoubtedly a Spurs legend. May he rest in peace. COYS.

The "hard man" should never be forgotten for his tremendous skill and ball control as well as his fearlessness and bravery and off the pitch he was a quietly spoken, well-mannered man that belied that label, mostly fuelled by the iconic photo of him with Billy Bremner.
Did you get to meet him Cosmic?

I told the story briefly in the thread "They don't make them like that any more..." from a few years back. I think that was what it was titled.

He was a hard player but fair.. He hated having to autograph that photo with Bremner. That particular afternoon Bremner was kicking Danny Blanchflower(I believe) all over the place, Dave had had enough of Bremner antics and took matters into his own hands.

I count myself lucky that I got to spend a couple of hrs with this man. I watched Glenn and Archibald every week as a kid and they were my idols. Wish I was 30 years older and got to watch Dave Mackay, and Danny every week instead..

Just wanted to say how terribly sad I am to hear of the death of Dave Mackay. I had the privilege of watching him play from 1960 to 1968. Everything that has been written and said about him is absolutely true.
We have lost a great man and a true club legend.
RIP Dave

“I remember coming out of the tunnel at the old Wembley – the Chelsea and Tottenham players came out together in a line,” said Gillie, with reference to the 1967 FA Cup final, when Mackay led Spurs to victory. “They stop before they tell you to come on. Dave Mackay turned round and said to the other Spurs boys: ‘they do not fancy it one bit’, he shouted. What a character!

“He was so impressive it was untrue,” continued Gillie. “His demeanour, the way he trained – he trained exactly the way as he played. He gave 100 per cent. He hated getting beat. Even in the gym. We used to play with little ice hockey goals and the arguments we used to have. He was so determined to win. He was such an inspirational figure for everyone at Tottenham. I mean, to win two FA Cups and then have two broken legs and come back to win a third one when I played in ’67, illustrate how inspirational he was.

“I think Bill Nick let him go to Derby possibly too early,” added Gillie. “OK, he gave him a free transfer so he could make a few bob.

“But I always remember pre-season training going to the training ground and [Derby manager] Brian Clough was there. I remember thinking, a little fearfully: ‘he is after someone, I bet it’s Dave’.”

Great read!

Never forgive Noël Cantwell for breaking Dave Mackay's leg at Old Trafford.

Manure knew they had to stop Mackay to stop Spurs.

Cantwell's "tackle" was the dirtiest most cowardly action I have ever seen on a football field. Took Dave out in a blind siding lunge. No man could take Dave out front on.

Was there. Never forgotten it and will never forget it.

Disgraceful Noël Cantwell. Disgraceful.

Black armbands and a minute's applause or silence tonight I hope. If anyone deserves the tribute, Dave does.

Sorry you never got to meet Dave, I know how much you idolised him.

Tonight actually.

But apparently: Tottenham will hold a minute’s applause inside White Hart Lane, the players will wear black armbands and a host of club legends will pay tribute to Mackay at half-time.

I thought I saw an interview with him where he said Bremner kicked him on his broken leg having just come back and it made him angry?

As you rightly said he hated that photo and thought it showed him to be a bully which he was not.

Of course! I still have my calendar on Tuesday.

Even better if some of the old players are there to add their tribute - I know Cliff will be one of them.
