Should be a minutes silence. True respect. Dave deserves more than this applause stuff.

I always think for the great characters or the really important figures then a minutes silence for respect that they deserve and then a minutes applause for a celebration of the person, their life and their achievements wouldn't be too much and quite appropriate.

I thought I saw an interview with him where he said Bremner kicked him on his broken leg having just come back and it made him angry?

As you rightly said he hated that photo and thought it showed him to be a bully which he was not.

From memory of The Real Mackay he and Bremner were mates and roomed togetehr on Scotland duty, however in this game the firat of the season with Dave just back from the second leg break Bremner went in hard. I think Daves reaction was more anger that a friend had done it and fear of it happening again. Like others have said in his book he says he doesnt like that photo as it mkes him look a bully and that isn't what he was.

Tonight actually.

But apparently: Tottenham will hold a minute’s applause inside White Hart Lane, the players will wear black armbands and a host of club legends will pay tribute to Mackay at half-time.

I much prefer the minutes silence. Far more poignant. Shame they are reluctant to do it anymore because some complete morons are unable to keep quiet.

Before my time but the sounds of it, he was an amazing player and person; a true legend. Give him a stand in the new stadium. May he rest in peace.

Loved Dave Mackay! Maybe the hardest man in football ... for sure he was one of the most talented players ever to wear the shirt. Is always my go to captain in any greatest Spurs team

Wouldn't last night have been a fitting one for Jimmy Greaves to join the ex players on the pitch leading the applause ? Possibly our 2 greatest players ever ? Maybe that's too idealistic to have hoped for ...

Don't think Jimmy has ever been back to the lane since he left. Never understood the reason, but I am sure there was a suggestion it was because of his transfer to west ham in the exchange deal with Martin Peters.

I read that was one reason, but in his own words (on going back to White Hart Lane):

“As a Sun reporter then a TV reporter I went there loads of times. Really loads. I launched my autobiography there and I attended the funerals of both Bill Nicholson and Bobby Smith.

“But I don’t go to games. I never have. It’s not just Spurs. I don’t go to any of my other clubs either.”

I also remember seeing an interview with Jimmy years ago where he said he didn't want to go to games because he simply couldn't stand the idea of being at a game and not being a part of it.

One doesn't know the whys and wherefores of Greaves sudden departure as a make weight in the Peters deal.

One story was that Bobby Smith charged up gambling debts to the Club and of course Bill Nic would not be happy with that and Greavsie stuck up for Bobby.

Towards the end of his time at the club, Jimmy took up drinking seriously. He was noticed at a pub before an FA Cup tie ( I think against Blackpool ) which we lost and he played a stinker. He and a few other first-teamers were dropped. Joe Mercer wanted him at Shitty, but he chose West Ham which he had a soft spot for in order to play with the great Bobby Moore. And he kept up his tradition of always scoring on his debut, getting a brace against Shitty.

Wasn't that AFTER he signed for West Ham?
