Former Blackburn and Tottenham forward David Bentley has retired from football after admitting he had 'fallen out of love with the game'.
The 29-year-old had been out of action for more than a year, failing to find a club after he was released by Tottenham at the end of the 2012-13 season.
He admitted last month that his time in football was coming to a close, and confirmed that on Friday morning in an, at times emotional, interview with Sky Sports News.
Bentley started his career as a teenager with Arsenal and had spells on loan with Norwich and Blackburn, who he joined in 2006 on a permanent basis, scoring a hat-trick in his first game.
Tottenham spent £15m to bring him back to north London in 2008 but he managed only 42 Premier League appearances and spent further loan spells with Birmingham City, West Ham, Russian side FC Rostov before a return to Blackburn, where he played his final professional games at the end of the 2012/13 season.
He retires after a total of 266 club appearances and he also played for England at all levels from U15 upwards, including seven appearances for the senior team between 2007 and 2008.
Bentley said: "I've given up football. It's over a year since I played my last game and I've taken the decision to take my life in a different direction. I felt like it was time to call it a day.
"I've just had little baby twins, three months old, and I've got a little four-year-old and I want to focus on that. My love for the game went a little bit and I didn't want to carry on just for the fact of paying me money.
"It's not really ever been an option for me to do that. I'm involved in a restaurant in Spain and we're bringing it to the UK, so there is a lot of work there.
"I enjoyed every minute of it and had a smile on my face every day but I don't want to carry on playing somewhere just for money, taking my family to a place we really don't want to be. Life's too short to do that.
"I've just fallen out of love with the game. I had a bit of a difficult time at Tottenham and it's just one of them things. It's probably a little bit early but it's where I am at now.
"It's a positive decision in my life and I am only viewing it as positive. I'm happy.
"I have no regrets. I loved every minute of playing but the game has changed. When I first started it was the enjoyment, going in to work every day was brilliant.
"Now it's a little bit robotic, the social media side of it, the money that has come into the game. I hate to say it, but it's made it boring and predictable - calculated - and to go and sign another three or four years into that wasn't really an option for me."

Don't know what went wrong with him, but I thought he was a cracking young player at Norwich, and he was excellent for Blackburn. I was genuinely excited when we signed him. Again, no idea what went wrong with him... other than it seems he just lost his desire for the game.

Can't say I feel in anyway sorry for him, he "retires" a very rich young man with his whole life ahead of him to spend it. But when we look at our lack of decent set-piece, long range passing specialists in the current England squad, then you can only imagine at what might have been. Shame.

In the other threads about him it talks about how he didn't take it seriously, acted like a child on England duty and shouted 'Postman Pat!' right in Capello's face (haha, but really...). He made a lot of money not doing very much in the last few years and now doesn't have to work again, so why bother... he can party and promote his clubs in Marbella or wherever they are.

Is it a case of big fish small pond?

He failed at 2 big clubs and prospered at 2 smaller 1's

If you mean Arsenal, then he hardly played for them did he? They have developed quite the habit for selling good players though.

He seemed a bit immature and unprofessional, and I think that made people in higher positions to dislike him as they viewed his attitude as a lack of respect. Though at one point he was an extremely bright talent, and even on his decline his set piece ability was up there with the best.

It would have been interesting to try him as a number 10, but we'll never know. Wish him the best though, I always believed he did genuinely care for Spurs.

Fair play to the guy for retiring. I remember Harry mentioning Bentley was spending a lot of time in Spain with his bar/restaurant thing. Hopefully for his sake he does well and let's face it, he's probably better off doing that than being another gimp in a long line of wanky pundits.

Still love his goal against the gooners in 4-4 draw. Classic. Celebration was even better haha!

I think he believed the hype about himself.
At one point the press had him down as the "next Beckham" and there's little doubt it went to his head.
Seems like he didn't have the work ethic that the modern game requires.

David Bentley retired from professional football a long time ago, not recently as that article would have you believe.

Good luck to him whatever he decides to do next, though I am surprised a Championship or lower half Premier League side hasn't taken a chance in him, maybe his wage demands were too high

It all went wrong with him after he pulled out of the under 21s which cost somebody else a spot. Bad attitude mixed with delusions of grandeur and that was the end of him sadly.

I don't understand. I read about this last month. And watched him being interviewed on Sky Sports.

He mentions in the BT sport interview earlier this year that it wasn't that he didn't have offers, (Harry even wanted him at QPR!), he just didn't want to keep playing.

The problem with Bentley is he thought he was better than he was. All this "had offers, didn't want to play" really means you had offers from clubs you consider beneath you. Those tears during his interview were not the emotion of retiring but the reality of finding out you are actually shit.

Ideas above his station in my opinion.
There are players out there who have played at the top level, and as they have got older have gone to clubs for the thrill/enjoyment of just playing, rather than looking for the wage.
2 examples that spring to mind are Alan Smith & Luke Chadwick
Both were at MK Dons until the end of this season, with Smith having been at the club for 3 seasons, Chadwick for 5.
Both had Champions League experience with Man United, both slipped down the pecking order for different reasons, but both still love the game.
In January Chadwick went a step further, joining non-league Cambridge United on loan for the rest of the season. He could have gone to numerous clubs in League 1, but he is from Cambridge, watched the play as a kid and his one dream in football was to one day play for them. He took a pay cut to join, saying that he didn't want to earn any more than the average salary any of their existing squad was on. After making his debut he openly stated that it was a bigger moment for him than his CL debut for United against Bayern Munich!
2 weeks ago he joined them on a free transfer.

Smith left the Dons around the same time, joining Notts County as a Player-Coach, despite not have agreed a wage. He just wants to be out there playing, regardless of what he earns.

Bentley seems to lack humility... Maybe if he wasn't such a prick at times, people/teams would take him seriously and would have given him the chance just to play football.

He then scored his first league goal for Tottenham against his old club Arsenal with a 43-yard dipping volley in a 4–4 draw on 29 October 2008.[23] This led the British mathematician Tony Mann to ask Marcus du Sautoy to name a symmetry group in honour of David Bentley; the group is labelled Set [C[1], C[2], C[3], C[4]]=[40, 13, 4, 4], with the final two digits corresponding to the result of the match

The highlight of his career- not the goal against Arsenal, the incredible consequence of that. What an absolute honour.
