ermain Defoe will miss England’s European Championship qualifiers against Bulgaria and Switzerland after being forced to undergo groin surgery.
The Tottenham striker will go under the knife next week in a bid to cure a problem that has dogged him since the World Cup.
Spurs boss Harry Redknapp revealed today the 27-year-old will be out for a minimum of two weeks and maybe even as long as a month.
That would mean he will sit out his club’s Barclays Premier League games against West Brom and Wolves, on top of England’s Euro 2012 openers on September 3 and 7.
He had been due to have the operation last Thursday but the German specialist who recently performed a similar operation on team-mate Alan Hutton was unavailable until next week.
Defoe missed Saturday’s Premier League win at Stoke after aggravating the problem but he is expected to play some part in tomorrow’s Champions League clash with Young Boys.
"He’s not trained a lot," Redknapp said.
"When he has trained, he’s been all right, he’s been sticking goals in.
"But then he’s had days off where he couldn’t train.
"And he’s getting worse, he’s getting worse all the time.
"Sixty minutes is about as much as he can last."
Redknapp, who has yet to decide whether Defoe will start tomorrow, added: "It might only be half a game he can last now, but it’s getting less each time – the pain’s getting worse.
"He wants to play and train all the time but he’s got to have it done now.
"He can’t go on like that."
Defoe’s injury helps explain his goalless start to the season, but Redknapp still hopes he breaks his duck before his operation.
"Tomorrow night might be the night for him to come back with a bang and start scoring a few," Redknapp said.
"I don’t want to pile pressure on him about it.
"He scores goals in training every day."
end

It's probably got to the stage where surgery has to be undertaken. It wouldn't be the first option. These injuries often respond to a period of rest.

I think they were trying to avoid the op.

To be fair, if he can play tomorrow and then have it, the situation isn't that bad. If he misses only 2 games by doing it now, then so be it... The timing is as good as it's going to get. Even if they could have done it post world cup, he would have then missed Man City and YB qualifiers... Postponing until now is better, i would have thought?

And it's not like he's in great form either (prob because of this in part?)

Isn't that what happened with Ekotto last season? He played on until the ACN, then had surgery instead of going off with Cameroon. It's not uncommon and i'm sure we want Defoe to help us qualify tomorrow night. Hopefully followed by 1 or 2 new strikers and we can cope better without him.

I hate players playing who are injured! Surely it's gonna do him some more fucking damage?!

And if he pulls up after 10-15 minutes we've then got to waste a subsitution with 80 minutes to go. It's stupid.

Presume he will play a part in tomorrows game.

Then go for surgery whilst there is an international break, and some easier fixtures afterwards.

I know JD is Harry's favourite, but we cant keep four strikers happy if he benches two fit ones for a guy who needs surgery and cant go longer than 60 minutes.

He's not lookd his usual sharp self. He was rushed back at the end of last season and looked off, I think Harry was too reliant on him. You can tell by his words that Harry wants to start him tomorrow, but I think it might be better to bench him and bring him on in the second half if we need a goal, so JD knows how hard he needs to go on his groin.

If he needs an operation it seems dopey to play him this evening, especially considering he hasn't been up to much since he came back from the last injury. Keane and Crouch tonight please.
