Not to completely change the subject but sections of Spurs Twitter going off on Mourinho after this was published is as predictable as it is stupid.
Of course they are. But not on the club, for allowing the lazy comment to go out when they had editorial control and could have protected him, or made sure the balance was there in the week later apology. But you listen to Lampard, Terry etc, and they paint a very different Jose to ours and obviously Dele suffered with Poch leaving as he was ‘more than a father figure’ but fundamental for me is that he repeats several times it’s not on Jose. The way the pull quote was used to intro the interview paints Jose in a bad light, but like the lazy comment, it’s half of the story, if that.

Jose was trying to do right by Dele in the way that he best knew how to, with honesty. Jose genuinely tried in my opinion. It's not his fault that Dele needed a certain type of authority figure.

Yesterdays waster/bum is todays Poor Dele

people are very quick to judge and call people out when they don’t know anything about that person

social media has a lot to answer for

I really hope Dele finds his place in life, and his happiness, especially if that's away from football. The modern, elite level game seems like an awful place.

That's people isn't it? Before social media most would pick the paper up and just moan about the same things to their mate.

Cant bash Mourinho at all, end of the day he was just trying to motivate the player as he knew what a player he can be. He didn’t know about Deles personal demons, nobody did, he said it himself he didn’t speak to anyone about it.

Interesting line in the BBC report "Alli, who praised the support offered by Everton, said he was speaking out about his experience sooner than he had planned as some newspapers had found out about him going into rehab"

Tabloids really are the dregs of humanity.

You're absolutely correct. It was ever thus. However, social media is very powerful vehicle for batshit crazy opinions and vitriol because no matter how stupid or out-there your opinion is, there are thousands more you have instant access to who share an opinion that would previously have not gotten much airtime.

Social media isn't the problem in itself. It's just a much more fertile space for the worst traits of humanity (and sometimes some good ones too in fairness).

I have watched the whole thing. I have to admit, I teared up listening to him talk about his trauma and childhood, and the subsequent addiction.

I remember listening to someone once say that people shouldn't be ashamed of addiction, as its usually a coping mechanism to help people survive.

I'm glad that he has owned his truth. Incredibly brave, and hope he finds happiness, and his football career.

Not really, it’s fine to criticise the performance of the player, but it will never be ok to personally attack them.

All fan bases do it. End of the day like trix said we are not a charity and we pay these players extremely well. If we feel their performance is not upto par than we as paying fans have a right to criticise how they play on the pitch only.

I’ve been pretty anti-Neville after ‘that’ interview, but the way he dealt with Dele and the empathy he showed was first class! 👍
I've never really understood the Neville hatred, he's articulate, generally impartial, intelligent and sits on the right side of social issues. Yes there have been a few mistakes but having more people like him in and around football would make it a better place

But again welcome him home as what? A 50k per week footballer taking the space of a young kid who is trying to break through?

Sorry but no, I'd be all for him coming back in another capacity and he may well make a very good youth coach for instance. He's obviously very relatable and likeable to the youngsters out there as shown by his social media following and he has been through just about every trial and tribulation they could face.

As a first team player though no chance, that has to be earned through performance.

Anyway this is all pie in the sky. There's no chance Everton release him after that the PR would be devastating.
Wouldn’t even need to talk contracts. Pay as you play or whatever as time goes on if we needed to but first and foremost he’d need to be training regularly and getting back to what his strengths are with support around him. I doubt he cares too much about money over happiness right now.

I'll just make it clear that I have never condoned the booing of our players regardless of performance and am strongly against it. I would never do it because it's 100% counterproductive.

That's a pretty harrowing story. Glad he got to tell it in his own terms than let more innuendo of his life be leaked. I was wondering why Poch said this week he would check in on Dele but now it makes sense since he's described like a father figure rather than an ex manager.

Oh that I could get on board with, but I think he'll get that at Everton. Dyche, whatever we could say about his style of play etc is a stand up guy who genuinely cares.

Criticise yes. Abuse and insult no. Both of those players have suffered from inexcusable abuse in the stadium and online. Paying money does not give anyone the right to abuse players.
