We're one of the biggest clubs in Europe, but we're way behind our competitors for top-4 status. That we haven't done an Aston Villa or a Newcastle speaks pretty well about the way the club are run, despite all our many frustrations. This is my first thread created, so apologies in advanced if I've made a mess of it.

I remember when football was about who had the most points at the end of a season

Yeah, but there's a ridiculously strong correlation to how much cash you have and where you end up in the table. It's funny how Man City and Chelsea suddenly became super competent with an infusion of a few hundred million pounds...I wish this stuff wasn't important, but it is. The romantic in me wants us to find a genius football manager who will develop the kids from the academy into a powerhouse, but the reality is for every player we can develop or discover, the teams ahead of us can match us by opening their wallets and going into the market. It's a tough business.

At least we're not West Ham!

All this shows me is that the finance situation in the Spanish league is a disgrace.

I find it quite depressing really. Hard to imagine how we can catch up the likes of Liverpool and they are only two spots ahead of us. The rest might as well be playing football on a different planet.

It depresses me sometimes, too, but supporting this team is too much fun for it to last. It really annoys me when the media lumps us in with those 5 teams ahead of us as if we're on level footing and it's only our incompetence that holds us back. They don't seem to realize how big an underdog we are.

Suppose it's nothing that a shiny new stadium and an oil-rich sugar-daddy cant sort out.

the new stadium is not going to be an immediate panacea but long term, its the only way to go, however, getting CL football on a regular basis is probably more important financially

Find the complete lack of Chinese money in that list interesting and am sure it won't be the case for long. My understanding is that there are a growing number of super-rich in China and can only be a matter of time before they start using European football clubs as status symbols like the Russians and Arabs have over recent years.

Guess the only thing holding them back would be wanting an actual return for their investment.

As I just posted in the thread in general football, comparing ourselves to Liverpool you can see where almost all of their extra revenue comes from: commercial deals. This is one of the reasons I was so pissed off with us selling Bale regardless of money offered - choosing a quick buck over the chance of a much larger and more sustainable long term gain.

There will be very limited Chinese investment in European football, the wealthy in China are Party members and its a policy of the Communist Party of China to try and create a Chinese football league that could rival the great European leagues so those interested in football will be urged to invest within clubs within China like the chap who bought Drogba and Anelka to Shanghai Shenhua.

Only ever tells half a story which is why I personally hate these 'football rich lists'.
