Hi first post,

Do not understand why people think Clint Dempsey is going to be some kind of saviour and turn our fortunes around. I am worried about this signing, cant see where he is going to fit into AVB's formation and stinks of a Levy panic buy. To lose Van der Vaart and replace him with Dempsey is very worrying and i can see him making no impact within these current tactics. Totally different player to VDV, Dempsey is all potshots and no creativity.

And VdV was class, some might even say a hero?

Guess we have no time for heroes :sneaky:

Welcome to SC btw, and sure VdV was a great player on his day, but now we have Dempsey and he has proven he has ability. All we can do is hope he keep scoring, and from his Fulham days he played at and scored from several positions, sure we will find a spot for him:)

He was never a replacement a VDV. I would go further and say that we would have got Dempsey even if VDV had stayed.

Dempsey is a better inside forward than Rafa, Bale or Lennon.

He's also a far better back-up #9 than Rafa or Defoe.

Of course he's not as good a #10 as Rafa, or traditionally winger as Bale or Lennon. But then AVB doesn't play a #10, and usually only plays one winger.

He actually fits AVB's system perfectly. He might not be as high profile a signing as Hulk or Remy, but he'll do the same job:

Usually:

--Sig---Sandro--Dembele

--Dempsey--Ade--Bale

If Bale is injured:

--Sig---Sandro--Dembele

--Lennon--Ade--Dempsey

If Ade is injured:

--Sig---Sandro--Dembele

Lennon--Dempsey--Bale

Yet Dempsey scored more than Rafa last season and same amount of assists.

You're right, though. He's not a direct replacement. Look at Dan's post.

TBH Sigudsson is the replacement for VDV, and so far he's not impressed me one bit. I think Dempsey will be very good for us.

Its all good writing names on a teamsheet but in reality i cannot see him fitting in, whether it is wide right, lone striker or in a midfield three

Our new formation will have us playing with 3 up top, Ade to lead the line and Dempsey+Bale on his flanks and a little deeper. This wont work unless all 3 up front manage to score a good amount of goals, come for that backpost when the other wide player cross the ball in etch.

Lennon was never good at either scoring or finding himself in scoring positions, he is more a classic winger instead of an inside forward while both Bale and Dempsey will do great in that position.

Why are you singling him out as a saviour and as if everything rests on his shoulders?

As Dan has said, he can play multiple positions and is a goal threat. He is a good addition to the squad, along with Lloris, Dembele, Ade, Sig and Vertonghen. As a package of signings (although it is missing a playmaker yes) we havent done badly.

Because in his first interview, he said: "I am Clint Dempsey, give me your hungry, your tired huddled masses. The flow's slacking, let's invade somewhere, and create some hungry, tired huddled masses."

I am not singling him out as a saviour, its kind of the point of the original post. Everyone else seems to subscribe to the idea that he will sort this mess out. 'Dont worry, we will be fine when Dempsey and Dembele are playing'

Look i bloody hope so but somehow i dont see anything changing

Not sure if it's "Time For Heroes" but it really is time to SUPPORT OUR CLUB!!!

It's easy to support a club when they're winning. It's how we conduct ourselves when we're losing that will separate the wheat from the chaff in my opinion.

I thought Harry leaving would mean you have no purpose in life, are you back because your not happy with AVB?

Mutability is our tragedy, but it is also our hope. The worst of times, like the best, always pass away.

Nope. I'm very optismistic about AVB actually.

Sig has been getting in good positions, but he doesn't appear on several of our players' radars yet. Dembele should help bring him into the game more I think.

That's because he's none of them - he's narrow right (or left).
