eight goals in seven games for portsmouth and showing what he could do if given the chance to play every week...obviously berba and keane are top strikers themselves, but defoe didn't get the same opportunity as them over the past 18 months...the club wanted him to sign a new contract and his failure to do so was why they ended up agreeing to sell him, but why should he stay at a club where he is starting once every five games, if he's lucky...feels like the club made a mistake, especially every time you see him score in a pompey shirt

I would be very upset if we sold Berbatov, because imo Defoe and Bent would be a great partnership.

But ultimately, Defoe and Berbatov didn't "gel" as one would like and with Defoe not signing a contract, and with Berbatov looking like he is going to stay, Defoe had to go.

The guy is going to score goals, sometimes spectacular, wherever he goes, I just think he had the touch of the Sol Campbell about him, loyal to the next pound note.

I would say no, he was 3rd choice. Everyone knew he would score goals where ever he went, he wouldn't sign a new contract so had to go

I really do not understand how you can come to the above conclusion? Defoe is a classy guy, who waited in the wings for 18months, and he wasn't first choice and he wanted to play first team football on a more regular basis. You cannot blame him for wanting to leave because of this.

As for Campbell, he is a **** and will always be remember as a ****.

No. Defoe is rubbish. He's the sort of player who looks good to people who don't watch him very often. He was good for us when we first got him, but the past couple of seasons he was rubbish. Portsmouth will realise this themselves soon.

No, Defoe isn't rubbish. I will bet you that he will score more league goals then Keane next season.

How much do you wanna bet?

to be fair their situations were completely different...defoe wasn't playing, lost his place in the england squad and could see berba and keane as the first choice partnership..if he'd signed a new deal his situation wouldn't have changed...the other guy, i can't say his name, would have been the main man at the club for years to come but screwed the club royally up the ar*e...mind you if you believe the rumours, he likes that sort of thing

I wouldnt put Defoe in the same class as Campbell, far from it.

Defoe wanted to stay, but wanted first team football but this was not guaranteed. He believe he should be in the first 11, the management did not. Under those circumstances he chose not to sign a new contract, I dont blame him. He has now proved that he is own worth to a club and manager that believed in him.

Campbell on the other hand was the first first name on the team sheet and was the Captain, so was not put under the same pressure as Defoe.

I rate Defoe and I am happy to see him getting 1st team football and doing well.

Defoe is a quality footballer no doubt about it.
But the fact is he is a complete confidence player.
As in his first season with us and now at Pompey he feels wanted and appreciated and so is banging in the goals. But, when the doubts creep in his finishing touch vanishes all too quickly.
Just look at his horrible misses against the goons in the semis for proof of that.
IMO he has the attributes to be world class but lacks the mentality.

I wish him all the best in his career, except when he's playing against us though!

So you think we should have sold Berbatov or Keane to Defoe keep happy ?

Quality player but probably doesnt actually know where Portsmouth actually is apart from being a trek from his fancy drum in Cuffley.

No. I think that Berbatov and Keane are the best partnership in the EPL. Again, how can you come to the above conclusion? Are you drunk?

Yep, you must be drunk.

When people reply to every post in a belligerent way it seems to me that they come on a forum with intention of trolling at every opportunity.

I am off to bed right now, but one way or the other I will be sober in the morning and nice to people.
