In many ways it's an irrelevant question, as squad-depth wins leagues.

However, I'd say Kane, Alli, Alderweireld and Eriksen (although I'd have to check the stats) are the best in their respective positions.

Then there are Lloris, Vertonghen, Rose, Dembele, and Wanyama who are equal to some of the best in the league, in their respective positions. If Lamela was playing regularly, he'd be in this group too.

I'm in two minds over Son - his scoring record is fantastic, but I'm not sure his all round game is in that top tier bracket. Perhaps I'm being a bit too critical of the guy; not sure?

Problem is, we need 3 or 4 more top players in the squad to be nailed on title contenders for the foreseeable future. And I don't think we have the financial clout to get those players.

Last two seasons the winners have very much relied on their first 11 and taken advantage of no European football.

This season, with the normal top 6 all in European competition it might be more of a squad game for the title this season.

Or maybe it is finally West Ham's year.

We haven't had the best 11 in the last 40 or 50 years, but luckily that has nothing to do with who wins the league.

As of today 31st July Man City. Some would debate Manu as well

You can go back exactly a year ago and say the same thing...in reality whoever has the best 11 is a load of nonsense because having the best players on paper rarely ever translates to the real world.

Our starting 11 is very strong and certainly one of the best but imo we need a maverick hazard/mahrez (all be it for only one season) type to win the league/cups and to be considered as having the best 11.
These types of players are hard to find or extremely expensive.
I am very unfairly pinning all my hopes of Edwards becoming this player

2015-16 Lamela was outstanding

Trawl through some of the threads from back then and you'll see what members were saying about him

It was a shame he didn't have a good go at it last season

He was never 'outstanding' he was played well in a confident team, he came no where near to the end product that Son gave us last year, not close.

Agree our starting 11 is up there with the best, but our squad as a whole is not IMO.

Can't believe we are the only club in the entire league not to make a transfer in whilst losing one of the best RBs in the league.

Hopefully some of the youth with make the step up, but I do worry about our depth.

It's really only an academic question, and the answer to the questions hold little value.

For one, I can't remember last I saw our supposedly 11 best player play at the same time, and if I'm not mistaken that will still be the case for quite a few weeks ahead.

Additionally, the quality of your 11 best players doesn't really decide whether you win anything, and for me, the question isn't about theoretical calculations of our 11 best players, but whether or not it is likely that we will be able to actually win a trophy of real prestige.

For me, at this very moment, I don't think we are any closer at winning any major tournaments now than what was the case a year ago. Maybe our chances even have lessened over the summer. I think that's a worry.

I'd say best XI's:
Man.City
Chelsea
Tottenham
Man.U
Arsenal
Liverpool

Squad strength + depth:
Man.City
Chelsea
Man.U
Arsenal
Liverpool
Tottenham

On this basis 3rd + 6th + playing at Wembley will probably result in a 4-6 place finish in my opinion. If we sign: RB, CB and AM of quality then that could change to 2nd-4th finish.

I think Man.City are nailed on 1st next year given their end of season form last year and new additions don't see how anyone will get close to them next season.

No way liverpoo have a better squad then us.

I reckon we have one of the best starting 11 in the league when all are fit.
As a team we are very strong, our manager is tactically good as well, it will be interesting this coming season between the seven clubs Chelsea Tottenham Man C Liverpool Arsenal Man U Everton, wild card (Newcastle/Leicester/West ham).
Squad depth will be important along with cup competition injury's fixture pile u etc...

Our squad depth isn't as bad as people make out yes we could do with maybe 1-3 more players. We have interchangeable players like Alli Son Eriksen Lamela (when fit) Dembele, we hope now that Janssen N'Koudou Sissoko can add more plus the development players I am pretty happy.

Chelsea beat us 2 out of three times and Liverpool outplayed us twice in the league we were not as good as everyone seems to think as times when wr needed to win we flopped. I don't think the noises coming from Loch and Levy are realistic of our current level and how to improve us.
