Well, maybe some of us prioritizes other qualities in a CD then being comfortable with the ball.
So just heading the ball is a CD, come on, really, how comes lukaku and carrol didnt score?
How about interceptions, tackling, bringing the ball out of defence?
No point in hoofing every time and giving the ball straight back to the opposition.
Who is this perfect defender your on about?

Nope, better to just pass it to them.

There are no perfect defenders. At least not in our price range. However, I will seriously cry the day Vlad is ahead of Dawson in the pecking order.

Unless you can show who they played all of their games against, the stats aren't much use.
Really?

They've all started 10+ games. I'd assume that they've faced all kinds of opposition. But do you honestly believe there's another reason for Vlad's poor stat other then him just being, you know, piss poor in the air?

This. He won 46% of his aerial duels this season, which simply is not good enough.
Yes, we must sign defenders and only focus on this stat! Jonas Olsson won 80% of his areal duels, SIGN HIM UP!

No one said we should. But many seem very willing to just neglect that stat altogether.

It's one stat. He is a short central defender, he is obviously going to struggle in that part of the game, his strengths are in other areas.

He's actually taller than Kaboul, believe it or not.

Yes, his strengths are in other areas, but are they enough to motivate playing someone with such an obvious exploitable flaw in such an important position?

Hmmm, alright. Then Spurs' webmaster need to get his facts right.

Not that it matters much. He's still lousy in the air. Worse than Walker and Rose, who def are shorter.

I was just sharing stats I read, sorry if that offended you.

Not offended at all. But we're at bit off topic now.

On topic I'd agree that Vlad have some wonderful qualities. But I'm just not convinced his silky skills are the most suited for a CD in Premier League. An interesting parallel is with David Luiz who's a bit similar in style. This years he's basically been converted into a DM by Mourinho. The best defensive manager in the world doesn't trust him in his d-line. That's food for thought.

I like him. Vlad reads the game well and has decent pace, alongside a dominate CB the combination bolds well.

People said that about Kaboul at a similar age.

Once he gains more experience in the Premier League I think his development will be exponential and we will be talking about him as a necessary name in the back line.

This.......he went to Portsmouth and was given game time and what a player he has become. Such a shame about his injuries though

I can assure you kubo that having met them both he considerably shorter than Kaboul. Maybe even by a full 3 or 4 inches.

Yup, there are many contributing factors to consider when looking at those stats. Who was in defence with him, who was supporting in midfield, the opposition. It's also quite common for players to jump into headers knowing full well they won't win it but to put their opponent off. Lots of different factors that aren't taken into account.

I'm not saying that proves that he is good at heading, but it certainly isn't enough to suggest that he is poor at it.

True. However, chosing between non-complete CD's I would pick someone who does the rudimentary defensive stuff - heading, tackling, blocking, getting the ball away - over Vlad's more luxury skills, seven days a week. But that's just me, it seems.
I would argue that these two are amongst the strengths Vlad has displayed this season, as well as an incredible talent for interceptions. All of which are great defensive attributes for a central defender to have. Simply being average in the air and making a few mistakes doesn't make him an overall bad defender.
