What's new

Does anyone else think the new wembley is a bit crap?

So it's my 4th trip to the new Wembley in 4 years tomorrow, and of course I am looking forward to it. Am going up very early and will have my fair share of beers.

But am I the only one who isn't a fan of our new national stadium?

For me it has nothing on the magic of the old wembley and I was lucky enough to see some spurs triumphs there. Yes it was a bit run down, yes there was a severe lack of toilet facilities but you knew you were somewhere very special. A true iconic stadium. And I miss it terribly.

It was a huge expensive mistake IMO to completely rebuild the grand old stadium especially without the twin towers. I think they should of just refirbed it like they did in Germany to an equally iconic stadium. The Olympic stadium in Berlin. Which was used for the world cup final in 2006. I remember thinking if only they did something similar to Wembley. What a shame as I know what stadium I prefer.

I guess it's the sign of the times and the soulless concrete bowel is all the rage.

It is in no way as atmospheric as the old Wembley, but to be honest I can't think of a new ground that I have been to that is, they all seem a bit soulless.

We don't have the bond with New Wembley yet. The 2-1 win over Chelsea got us a cup but all 3 of our games (and the two Wembley Cup games against Barcelona and FC Bangles) have been a bit shit. Bit of a show tomorrow would go some way towards renewing the relationship and sealing our love of Wembley again.

I've not seen any football there but having been to a few gigs I agree that it is just a bigger version of the modern 'indentikit' bowl stadium. This is something I very much hope we avoid with our new ground.

90000 rabid, beer fuelled supporters there won't care where they are - just going for it and urging Spurs on from our end...and if we win, it will seem like the best stadium in the world.

A sad indictment of modern football that this will be nowhere near the case for either the semis or the final.

Not falling over drunk types, but certainly with the pubs being open from 11.00am, it will stoke up the atmosphere for sure.

I think it's crap. I've been a few times to various sporting events and it's completely lacking in atmosphere. A few weeks back some were suggesting the FA might do a deal with us to lend us Wembley Stadium, but that would be detrimental to our chances. It's also the reason why everyone knows WHam will never make the OS work.

Ah yes, the atmosphere will be stoked up by the beer but unfortunately there aren't going to be anything like 45k Spurs and 45k Chelsea in there and the entire middle tier of a 3-tier stadium will be far from "rabid".

That's true Richie although a lot of that middle tier being neutral will have sold their ticket to Chelsea and Spurs fans prepared to pay the going rate and there will be pockets of noise joining in, I hope!

The first time you go and you walk up the steps from the concorse to witness the sheer size of the stadium it does take your breath away and it is impressive

After the initial awe it soon dawns on you that the middle part is a joke and the stadium creates no atmosphere whatsoever

and when they crank up the volume on the tanoys to about 100 decibels you know your onto a loser

Crap place and far too expensive. Lots of people I know who used to follow England religiously don't go to Wembley anymore

If we build a new ground it will be no different I'm afraid

I just remembered that the total cost of the project was £1 billion. £1 BILLION!!!!

To put that into perspective, the Millennium Stadium was £121 miliion, Croke Park €260 million and the Aviva Stadium €410 million, and they are all arguably superior stadia.

I thought the old wembley was a bit crap too.
It doesn't help that they both try and rip off the punters as much as possible.

It's an impressive stadium no doubt but lacks that final dig dong game people will remember for year. I think the interior colour should be changed too.

Suggestions!

Will be my 5th time to Wembley tomorrow, and each time it gets worst

Atmousphere-less, lacks that 'soul' that the old Wembley had.

The pitch was an afterthought.

A couple of years ago I would have definitely agreed with you and the media was full of criticism regarding it (in the semi against Pompey it cut up so badly and played so slow that it was a distinct disadvantage to us), but then they changed the surface to the semi-synthetic type that they have at The Library and since then I think it's been a lot better personally.
Have been to the new stadium twice and liked it, the old one had a lot of romance and history but was somewhat of a piss-stained wreck by the end! Perhaps the comments on atmosphere allude more to the type of people attending these days rather than the structure itself - huge allocations for top-dollar paying, prawn sandwich-eating corporates with little interest in football may be the true reality of the situation...

The middle has zero atmosphere due to many reasons including people more interested in stuffing their faces in the hospitality areas below and the top is so far away from the action that you might as well be watching it from Mars. Plus it's steep and you can't stand in that upper tier. Nobody's ever made a racket sitting down

Not sure how many seats make up just the lower tier but the upper 2 offer absolutely nothing in terms of atmosphere
