Italy have parted company with coach Roberto Donadoni following their exit from Euro 2008. BBC Sport was told of the decision by the Italian football federation (FIGC) after speculation grew around Donadoni's future after the Spain loss.
He signed a two-year contract extension before Euro 2008 - but it contained a 10-day get-out clause on both sides.
Italy lost their quarter-final 4-2 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes of play.
Following Sunday's defeat, Donadoni was adamant he would not quit the role he took on in July 2006.
"Resign? The thought would never even entered my brain," said Donadoni.
"I don't have a reason. We only lost a game on penalties. You can't say things work when you win but don't work when you lose on penalties. We will talk and decide. It doesn't make any sense to talk about whether I deserve to carry on."
Meanwhile, Italian football federation president, Giancarlo Abete, gave no clues as to whether his coach would be retained.
"Over the next few days we will reflect and make a decision about this," he said.
"It doesn't make any sense to make a decision in the heat of the moment."
He added: "In the next few days we will discuss what will happen. We'll retrace our steps."

Italy were quite lucky to get through their Euro qualifying group when Scotland nearly caused an upset. I think replacing Lippi after winning the WC was such a hard task and looked to be too bigger ask for Donadoni. With the players he had in that squad he should have produced a decent level of football, instead it seemed very route one. Rumours are Lippi may get the job back and also Totti and Nesta would come out of international retirement.

I despise the way Italy have been playing in this championships i cant believe he set out with 4 central midfielders against spain. In the end deserves to go.

No surprise, the football they played against Spain was shocking considering the talent available.

We only lost a game on penalties.. Correction you only got to that stage because your keeper saved a penalty.

it annoys me how managers don't do the right thing and step down when they fuck up... its all about the money, don't get me wrong if I was going to be paid up my contract I'd sit tight... but its still not right.

International football is so ridiculous. IMO the knockout stages should be two legs. Italy could have quite easily beaten Spain and even won the whole thing, it is literally just flip a coin nowadays .

Well donadoni has had the press and the Italian fans on his back for over a year now, so its no supprise. Donadoni kept playing players out of position who where past their prime and was too scared to give youth a chance. The Italy players who won the world cup feel they have nothing else to give and apart from the really important players (pirlo, Buffon, cannevaro ect.) and the ones who still seem to care (Grosso, De Rossi, Del Piero ect.) should stay, while the others should deside if they care anymore, because if they dont whats the point in them bieng their!?

One of the reasons I like international football so much is because they're not.

Two leg matches bore me to tears.
