Doncaster v Spurs preview

Crouch set for Spurs start; O'Driscoll sweating on duo

Peter Crouch is set to make his first Tottenham start in the Carling Cup match against Doncaster on Wednesday evening.
Spurs lost to Manchester United in the final of last season's competition, having lifted the trophy under Juande Ramos 12 months earlier.
They have made an excellent start to the new campaign and will be looking to maintain their winning run at the Keepmoat Stadium, although Harry Redknapp is set to make several changes.
Redknapp will rest the likes of Luka Modric and Wilson Palacios, with Crouch, David Bentley and Jamie O'Hara are all expected to be given opportunities.
Jonathan Woodgate (groin), Michael Dawson (Achilles), Jermaine Jenas (calf), Gareth Bale (knee) and Heurelho Gomes (groin) are out, while Ledley King will be left out.

Doncaster news

Doncaster's only victory so far this season has been their 1-0 success away to Notts County in the first round.
They drew their opening three Championship fixtures before losing 2-0 to Middlesbrough at the weekend.
Manager Sean O'Driscoll has doubts over Brian Stock and James Coppinger for the Carling Cup clash.
Stock has picked up an ankle injury, while fellow midfielder Coppinger is struggling with tendinitis and both could miss the visit of the Premier League leaders.
However, O'Driscoll is boosted by the return of midfielder Martin Woods, who missed the defeat to Boro with a calf injury he picked up against Coventry.
Defender Gareth Roberts overcame an ankle injury to play the full match at the weekend and is set to keep his place in the starting line-up.
Defensive duo Byron Webster (ankle) and James O'Connor (knee) are back in training and may feature at the Keepmoat Stadium.

TEAM NEWS

Doncaster Rovers midfielders Brian Stock (ankle) and James Coppinger (knee) are both doubts.
But fellow midfielder Martin Woods has been given the green light to return following a calf injury.
Tottenham striker Peter Crouch is set to make his first start for the club as Harry Redknapp plans to make changes.
Redknapp will rest the likes of Luka Modric and Wilson Palacios, meaning David Bentley, Jamie O'Hara and other fringe players will feature.

MATCH PREVIEW

Spurs are top of the Premier League after three matches and hoping to establish themselves as major challengers this season.

They also have a strong enough squad to field some major players at Doncaster even if others are rested, and they are facing a side who have had major problems scoring at home and have not won in the league this season.
So many factors seem to be in Tottenham's favour, and the club has only been knocked out in the second round of this competition once in the last 30 years.
But Doncaster are a neat footballing side which showed last season that they can unsettle teams that give them room to play.

MATCH FACTS
Head-to-head
• These clubs have only met on eight occasions. Doncaster have won once, Spurs five times and two games have been drawn.
• In their only League Cup meeting, Spurs thrashed Rovers 7-2 in the quarter-finals at White Hart Lane in December 1975.
Doncaster
• Doncaster's League Cup form has been on the decline in recent years. They got to the quarter-finals in 2005/06, the third round in 2006/07, second round in 2007/08 and went out in the first round last season.
• Paul Heffernan needs to score to bring his total of club career goals to 100.
• Keeper Neil Sullivan is in line for his 550th club start.
Tottenham
• Spurs have reached the final of this competition in the last two seasons.
• Jermaine Jenas is on 299 career club starts.

Impossible to predict the team.

Looking forward to seeing players like Pav, Crouch, Naughton, O'Hara, Gio, etc getting a run out.

I hope we don't go too crazy with the changes at it's a competition we have a good record in and a good chance of winning. I imagine Crouch will start. I'm not sure about Naughton, Hutton might be given a chance.

Need to mix in some first teamers with the reserves. Doncaster won't be any pushovers and I can see us easily getting knocked out if we put out a team full of reserves.

I can see us going with this team:

Cudicini/Button

Hutton Charlie Bassong Naughton

Bentley KPB Hudd O'Hara

Crouch Pav

By all accounts Doncaster like to play open football.

If they do and they decide to play like that tonight they could pay a heavy price!

I agree with you, we should mix it up. But I really wanna leave Huddlestone out of this, at least out of the starting line-up. He looked a bit tired towards the end of the West Ham game and I want him fresh against Brum.

I guess that's three of our first choice back-four for a non-King game. I'd sooner see BAE start at LB, so our defensive unit can continue to develop an understanding, and possibly use Naughtons pace in midfield.

If we're going to play Crouch then it would seem like a good game in which to play Bentley so Naughton could possibly play on the left. I'd chose from one of O'Hara and Boateng to play in the middle with one of Huddlestone and Palacios. I'd probably favour Palacios and O'Hara as cup ties can become scrappy affairs. If we want to use another youngster, we could try Bostock in for O'Hara.

I agree that it would be good to start with Pavlyuchenko and Crouch tonight. That gives something like:

Cudicini

Hutton Charlie Bassong BAE

Bentley O'Hara Palacios Naughton

Crouch Pav

totally agree about Hudd. I re-watched the last game and he looked really tired.

What about Rose on the left and O'Hara in the middle?

I'd also like to see Gio up front with either Crouch or Pav. oh hell why not play him behind the front two and go all out?

I do think that the players who are on the edge of the first team would be the way to go.

They will have to take their chance if they want to push for a starting place in the Premiership.

Cudicini
Hutton Corluka Bassong Naughton
Bentley O'Hara KPB Rose
Crouch Pav

Cudicini hasn't played much so will be fine to play again. Still short at CB so Corluka and Bassong can try and get a better understanding together.

I think no matter what team we put out tonight (as i think we will still be strong enough with our 'second string') we will win by a good few tonight.

If its the same team that has been playing then we will be too good for them, if its alot of the players trying to get into the first team then they have alot to prove.
