Porto do have money, but they have always had money and rarely spend big on players. They buy low and sell high. They have made something like 350m euros PROFIT on players in the last ten years by developing players and selling at a premium.

Just because they have money from the sales of Moutinho and Rodriguez is no indication they will splash some of it on Bernard at 25m. This is Atletico creating an auction.

In the past Porto had the Falcao money, or the Carvalho money, or the Pepe money, Hulk money, and they reinvest it in players they can make a profit on. After Hulk at 16m, the next most expensive player in the club history is Danilo at 11m. It would be a big change of attitude to go after Bernard at 25m when they have been buying up cheaper players from the Portuguese league - including a centre mid and attacking mid already.

Could they really sell Bernard on for a profit in a few seasons? Maybe, but it's easier to generate profits on players like Rodriguez who only cost 6.5m than 25m players.

doesnt proto rely on the third party ownership to get in gifted young players, from south america?
They only pay a small premium, to get these players in from south america, play them in europe for a few season, then sell them??? The likes of hulk, moutinho, deco, falaco etc all were brought into the club by the likes of kia joorabchian & jorge mendes, for one reason only to maximise profit for the investment groups. They all get a cut from the deal, the club in brazil, proto, the investment group.
It wouldnt surprise me if a percentage of Bernard's rights were bought by one of these groups, then transferred to proto, in the prospect that he will be sold in a few years time.

It's already been discussed that Bernard has a 10% third party ownership, that would have to be negotiated with any buyer. It's common for players from South America to be owned like this, provides opportunities they may not be able to find on their own or through their clubs - although it's changing as the economy in Brazil grows stronger (and UEFA wants to close the loophole).

Still, if the price is 25m.. how much room for profit is there? clubs like Spurs and Dortmund have been linked and spoken about by the president, neither club can cope with a 3rd party ownership issue. Not sure if it's illegal in Germany but it is in the Premier League.

Bild reporting Eriksen to Dortmund. Imagine, that leaves Bernard with one less suitor. Can't see the lad wanting to play for Porto in WC year and would (I hope) relish the exposure playing in the PL...sounds good in principle at least!

It's easier for a Brazilian to adjust to life at Porto fc/in Portugal than in the EPL, so it may be the reason he may choose Porto - or stay put in Brazil.
It's every players dream to play in a WC in one's home country, which may play a major role in some of Brazilian targets of Spurs.

Just watched that clip for the 2nd time. I know youtube clips shouldn't be taken as gospel but fuck me, this guy was born to play for Spurs.

Really hope we can get it done before the end of July, or before any other fuckers become interested. COYS

I can't help wonder that we just watching this dude in case Bale is sold, then we will make a move on him as a replacement

I dont see where we would get the coin for a new striker, Bernard and Paulinho

I think it's possible, we had a £20m deal for mouts collapse then a similar thing with damaio, so you'd assume that money was available plus the extra tv money this year, say £10m, add in some sales and you've gotta be looking around the £50m mark. All guess work I know but it doesn't seem beyond the realms of possibility

I think he would be seen as possible Bale replacement for the future.

He has (at least) one year to learn from Gareth and one year to settle in. And the pressure on him wouldn't be so high if he joins us now.
Would make sense.

We'll be pushing it tight mate!! He & his club have said he won't be going anywhere before the climax of the Copa Libertadores, which finishes on July 24th.

I agree with you, sim0n.... Then I find myself thinking "what if Levy, AVB & Baldini have all sat around and discussed exactly that?" (and it's perfectly conceivable that they may well have done)... Seriously, I wouldn't bet against it at all. MAYBE 'the unit/team' would benefit from such a crazy thought? How often was it down to the brilliance of Bale, to get us out of the shit last season? Imagine if Levy, AVB & Baldini had already had a chat about how we can't continue to rely (depend) upon the lad. They'll all know he's eventually going to leave anyway!!

Honestly, I think this summer is the time to go for it and I think Levy knows this too, or at least I hope he does.

We're basically sitting on £70-85 million in Gareth alone so if we gamble large we know we have the assets to cover it.

Importantly, if we fail to significantly improve the team/squad, we've every chance of losing two of the best assets we've had in a very long time, namely the coach and GB. I can't see either of those guys sticking around if we don't make some major impact signings and perhaps rightly so. They are talented and ambitious professionals and the club should be aiming to match their level.

I think we could comfortably spend in the region of £60 million (c. €70 million) this summer without risking the financial stability of the club in any way. Isn't there a large cash windfall from new TV rights coming up too? Our war-chest must be pretty big at the moment given we haven't spent so much in the last couple of years relative to our sales. Plus there's whatever we get from the alleged 10 players which are up for sale.

If it was me, I would pay up to 23 million for Bernard (if that's what it takes), 17 million for Paulinho (or a.n.other), leaving us with approx 30 million (remember this is Euros) to get a striker and any other squad improvements (left back?).

If we make the Champions League next season the outlay will be covered. If we don't GB is most likely going to demand a move and it'll be covered (and then some) from his sale.

Personally, I doubt either of those two will fail to excel in the PL. Yes Bernard is small but so is Lennon and the Brazilian is arguably the much more talented of the two.

If we spend €70m this transfer window, I will be reinforcing my roof incase any flying pigs land on it...

Rep'd as 'winner' because 'like' and 'informative' don't do it justice. Excellent find, mate.. I especially like the parts that say, "What matters now is that Bernard chooses his next move for Footballing reasons than any other incentives."....

And "Chelsea wouldn’t be a wise choice at this stage of the Brazilian’s career. While the money on offer would, in all likelihood, be higher than other potential suitors, Bernard wouldn’t get the required regularity of games needed to kick on to the next level. Tottenham could be a viable option, with Andre Villas-Boas being the main draw."....

I personally chose to ignore the part that said "However, the much-talked-about physicality of English Football could be “too much, too soon” for a 1st move out of South America. Furthermore, the spotlight of the English media and tabloids wouldn’t be a good thing for Bernard at this point in time.".... Nice one for sharing that little discovery, mate (y)

Porto won't have to pay 25m because we won't go anywhere near that anyway so if money isn't an issue all they have is language, trophies , CL, previous experience of taking Brazilians and letting them go to bigger clubs after a few years and of course they will deal with 3rd party paracites who can have a say in where he goes.
If Porto are really in for this kid then if we get him you have got to say Levy has pulled off an incredible deal.
