Prof on COYS saying we were quoted around £60m when we enquired. Given that they reportedly don't want to lose him, I can't see them budging much from that price, so I wouldn't be surprised if we've moved on to other targets (VDV)
Bayer Leverkusen used similar tactics when we tried to buy Berbatov and Son. Eventually, a compromise was reached.

Wouldn't shock me at all if we ended up with van de Ven, Tosin (1 year left, good HG player), and a loan or next to nothing agreement for Lenglet. Things can obviously change but too much time on his contract and can't see them budging too much unless other players in their squad don't end up going.

I think our fans would be a little frustrated but I think we'd be 75% there defensively personally if that were to happen. Hoping I eat those words however!

Im not that surprised by the valuation (if its true), his contract runs out in 26, is only 24 and is probably their best defender. They also look likely to be loosing Tah and Frimpong. Im just surprised we didn't get knocked back straight away. One would think that Tapsoba along with Wirtz are their two most valuable assets.

A player is worth what a club will pay for him. We're getting Maddison for £20m less than was reported.

People say numbers all the time. If we've bid what we've bid it's because that's where we think the range should be.

City pulling out of Rice also show that even they won't pay stupid money, they'll move onto their next target.
Some might say that City's reported interest in Rice was just a tactic to force Arsenal to pay more and possibly prevent them pursuing some of their other targets. Weakening your likely opponents by manipulating the transfer market was one of SAF's favourite games, back in the day.

I can see this happening and I think it would be disapointing.

I personally think it would still leave us exposed - Tosin has not really been a stand out player for a mid table team and VDV is still very young. Don't get me wrong, I think both are good prospects, not against signing either but to have them as 2nd and 3rd choice CBs would be a risk.

I would be really encouraged if this is the path we look to take when it comes to transfer proceedings hence forth.

Every club has priorities/lists and every club, without exception, has to at some point make compromises.

Historically we chase the player for far too long without moving on to suitable targets and then scratching around end of August in a panic whereas now it would appear (fingers crossed) like a proper recruiting system in place and the ability/wherewithal to know when to move on to secure the players the manager wants in a timely manner so they can bed in properly pre season and by extension be readily available when the season kicks off.

Yeah he’s a long way ahead of him in his development and miles better on the ball. He is 2 years older though.
I really think we could do with both, although Tapsoba should certainly be the priority. Also I would be very surprised if we didn’t bring in a HG defender if we did get 2.

Yeah but maybe well get tosin as a 3rd if we shift more players on.
I guess we don’t have to worry about HG for this season and with us signing maddison it helps I guess.

D1 saying we're in advanced talks in the ITK thread. I really hope so, sounds like the ideal 1st choice. Maybe these other Bayer players linked with moves will just push us into gear. Better for them to make 1 big sale then several.

Agreed. Whilst I rate VDV highly, I do think we need a transformative signing in defence who will walk into the team, and I think Tapsoba is the only link we've had so far which would achieve this.

Tapsoba and Tosin (HG) would be a really good balance of signings for me. Can both play either side, both good with the ball, and if they replace Dier and Sanchez then we've gained a HG spot too.

From the vids I have Tapsoba look like he is showboating with some of his tricks. I don't think he means to it just look like it
