Jesus, I can't think of a single player other than Gerrard to play that central role. Carrick maybe, of if you just want a busy **** to rummage around and do a more disciplined defensive job I guess you could chuck (not very) Cleverly in there.

Carrick, Gerrard, Barkley, Wilshere, Lallana, Townsend, Sterling, Milner, Oxlade-Chamberlain

Rooney, Sturridge, Welbeck, Lambert

Huddlestone on standby.

Townsend had ankle surgery last week, ruled out of WC.
I personally think Walker won't go either - been injured too long and no-where near match ready. Johnson will go in his place.

You would take Welbeck and Carroll over Sturridge???

No Sterling either?

No disrespect, but I think you're mental.

I'd go:

Hart/Foster/Forster

Johnson/Clyne (as Walker injured)/Jagielka/Cahill/Lescott/Jones/Baines/Shaw (I'd have taken Cole over Shaw but we know that Cole has been omitted).

Gerrard/Henderson/Barkley/Wilshere/Barry/Oxlade-Chamberlain/Milner

Sterling/Lallana/Sturridge/Rooney/Lambert

I'm expecting a couple of oddities though. Rumours going around that both Wilshere and AOC are only standbys.

Meh, it's a game of opinion.

I don't rate Sturridge outside of Liverpool, he's a world class finisher but England won't enjoy the amount of possession and chances that he gets at Liverpool, and I don't feel he is the man to get us behind the back 4 whereas I believe Welbeck is both capable and willing to play out wide with intelligence and Carroll is a plan B/wildcard who we could send on to batter a south american defense or go lazy and lump it forward to him when we're outdone in midfield or knackered.

Likewise with Sterling, I feel Rodgers' system has dressed him up to look better than he is, similar to Lucas and Flanagan and whether you like it or not, Coutinho. He isn't the most mature player either and I just feel that in the heat of Manaus, his legs and mind will desert him whereas the likes of Milner and Lallana will exert more composure.

Oxlade-Chamberlain I'm not entirely convinced by but England need some pace, his versatility and size also squeeze him in ahead of Sterling for me. Wilshere is also a worry for me, I don't doubt his ability but every tackle he takes you fear he's out for the next few weeks, his ankles seem to be made of glass.

Fair enough Luke. Personally can't see any value in taking Carroll AND Lambert. Only 1 such option should come in use.

I agree with all your comments about Wilshere and Milner and Lallana, but as Welbeck has been predominantly used by Hodgson out wide I'd sacrifice him to take Sterling.

Smalling and Jones.
At least we know if either of them two start there will be goals in our games....

Agree with the squad overall. Brave, but that's what we wanted. Barkley and Lallana hopefully will get chance to shine.

I think both are shite. Surprised Stones is the standby, shows what he thinks of Caulker. Not many options there.

Aside from Barry and Carrick there isn't much to dispute about the squad. Would have been an interesting debate if Walker, Townsend and Walcott were fit.

Lallana, Sterling, Barkley, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaw and Sturridge. Great to see the young players that have come through and shown their talent being given the chance to do it at a world cup.
