In the latest Getty shots do people think he looks overweight or I’m just being pedantic ? Personally I think he could easily lose 1-2 stone which would improve basic mobility and speed. With all the support nutritionally the sports science, there’s really no excuse for any player to have an ounce of fat on them imo.
I don't know anything about sports science at all, but I do get where @Delboy75 is coming from to an extent.

Dier was a much better CDM when he was younger and more mobile. He massively bulked up at some point and it seemed to coincide with him losing some of that mobility and being less effective in midfield (he was still pretty young so shouldn't have slowed down naturally). For comparison, Lukaku has massively trimmed down since moving to Inter from United and, as a result, is a much more effective striker.

Dier was never massively mobile anyway, and his lack of agility isn't quite as important now that he's a CB, but I do wonder if his quest to become a beefcake has actually helped him as a footballer.

I've some basic knowledge on this, but happy to be corrected by greater expertise on the forum.

Based on the photos and games, I would broadly estimate Dier as being 10-12% body fat. Leaner than the 12-18 months after his appendix issues certainly.

The ideal body fat range for elite footballers is said to be between 8-12% depending on body type and position/role played.

I've read that the average body fat % for the PL is 10.2%, bearing in mind that GKs, CBs, and target men no.9 are required to be a little heavier than say "tricky wingers", though these are fine margins.

Loosing 2 stone, even if conditioning down muscle mass at the same time, would put him way below 8% and therefore really not a good idea. Lukaku for instance would steam roller his way through him like he wasn't there.

There comes a point where what minimal gains in mobility would be offset against loss of strength, power, and susceptibility to injury.

Would he benefit by loosing 1 or 2 pounds of fat and condition down 1-2%? Really difficult and probably unwise to call from the outside. Pictures can be deceptive because you can appear to go massively up and down in water weight on a given day, and depending on your recovery cycle / carb loading.

As a DM he was lighter but not necessarily leaner, but never fast on the turn. He was quick in straight line sprints to the ball, and actually still has some of that. But never had great turning speed, acceleration, or agility imo.

His conditioning seems pretty much bang on for a CB.

Lot riding on his shoulders these next few games given that Romero and Sanchez are not both out of the picture.

the next few months! DIer is our lead centre back now, neither Sanchez nor Romero are going to be around much until well into next year. Let's hope Eric can do it.

I thought both he and Gallagher were lucky to be on the pitch by the time Tanganga was sent off personally.

Agree. If the tackle on Dier had been reversed I bet Dier would have seen a yellow at best. I am constantly disappointed with our players over their acceptance of poor decisions and lack of cards issued on poor and cynical tackles. We are just too nice and accepting. We need to get in the refs face. Other teams do it.

Mason is not fit to ref at this level. I hope behind the scenes the club reinforce how poor and biased his performance was

Not really. Under normal circumstances it doesn't look good but Dier really slid in from a long way out to get the ball and that's why it happened.
Ayew left his foot in and was over the top. As I said in another post if it had been the other way Dier would have received at least a yellow.

Strange injury looked like impact not a twist or tear. Looked in very bad way going off, most impact injuries wouldn’t leave you like that unless very serious, but yet he played on for 10 minutes. Hopefully not as bad as looked.

He wasn't right though. When he was bouncing to be ready for a free kick coming in, he was only jumping on one foot, and he wasn't running around. I thought at the time he had overstretched knee ligaments, but haven't seen any news.

Solid today. Worked well with Romero.

He was which was why I was surprised by some of the comments in the match thread about his part in the goal given there was a huge gaping hole due to Romeros silly rash and stupid challenge earlier in the move.

Ridiculous, isn’t it? He got hung out to dry by Romero for their goal.

Excellent today. Really happy that there's still hope for Eric making it as a centre back. Such a good bloke, sincerely wish that he can get some good fortune with consistent form and fitness.

I don’t know, he’s just resorted to backing off, so although it doesn’t look like clear errors like previous, it’s not proactive defending and he drags everyone back with him. There has to be a point where you engage as a defender. He very rarely does now.

And Romero was seen off a bit by the two midfielders tackling each other (nearly the only mistakes made in midfield).

Yep, first half he was faultless. Second half he was down the other end from me so I didn’t see so much of him but a good games nonetheless

Arguably that’s what you need next to a player like Romero, who’s all about closing down and engaging attackers.

I think someone who’s quick around on the cover would be good with Romero, but that player can still be a proactive when defending those situations. Dier just lets players run at him all the way into the penalty area. He looks like he’s been scarred by his mistakes at CB the last couple of years.
