I wish I could find the post, but I mentioned a while ago that I didn't want him anywhere near the England squad because his domestic form would suffer. Lo and behold, back in the England fold and he turns back in to 2019 Dier in 4 or 5 games.

I don't know whether he has his mind on just getting in the WC squad, and is another who is scared of getting injured, but his performance levels have definitely dropped 30-40%. Shame, because I've been a strong backer of him.

He is so fragile as a player he made that back pass yesterday and his game fell apart - Wilson had him on toast the first goal was so easily avoidable - I don't mind him as player but his not a kid and that was poor from him yesterday and has been for the last few games

we dont deserve to win trophies with him playing sadly, had 8 years to see his simply not good enough to take us to a elite level, the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, city would of got rid long ago
This argument after his every bad game is so boring and I would say really wrong. Who exactly would of got rid of him long ago?
Chelsea managed by Mourinho who wanted Dier at United, gave him new contract at Spurs and only dropped him in his last month here?
Or when Conte was Chelsea manager and now he's made Dier basically his undroppable first choice? I don't think it would have happened under Tuchel when he improved basically every CB he had there and wanted to have like 10 center-backs in his squad either, or even Lampard because he wanted to build squad around English players.

The reason why Liverpool struggles this season you could say is because Klopp instead of refreshing his squad prefers to keep current options and give them new contracts. Sure, he would definitely sell Dier.

The squad build was always a process. We had to replace the ones who offer nothing first. I feel Dier is one player not in urgent need to replace in the summer. We had to sort more pressing areas first. I expect next summer would be to drop Dier to the bench where I think he's perfectly capable to come in and do a job. Unless we could get someone in Jan.

The problem with our defence is it is made up of mostly pre Conte players who have already show their arse on numerous occasions.

Davies, Dier, Tanganga and Sanchez are all capable of the odd good performance. Davies and Dier have actually proved capable of stringing a few together. Problem is they all revert to type sooner or later and it holds us back.

I'm sure Conte is aware of this but you can't sell and replace 4 centre backs in one or even 2 windows especially if you want quality coming in. If Conte could have got the 2 or 3 centre backs he wanted in the summer then i think we could have waved goodbye to at least 2 of the above.

Has been way way better under Conte and in the back 3 but ultimately he has limitations and will put in performances like the last few games now and again.

Don’t know whether it can be explained by a lack of confidence but he now seems so nervous when he has the ball & as well as giving it away far too many times he also has a habit of giving it to someone else who is in a worse position, which puts them under more pressure than he was in the first place.

its mysterious - he's either fatigued (likely reason) so is just a bit slower than usual with his thought process & his execution is off but these mistakes were not happening in last part of previous season or earlier this season OR he has just lost all his confidence OR he feels he's achieved his goal of being elected for England again. I don't know but maybe the guy just needs a rest before he gets injured like PEH or Romero (fatigue related injuries) before we make a judgement on his form

Incredible how quickly this thread has gone from ‘so important to us, how is he not starting for England’ to ‘he’s shit, get rid’ - as though he’s the first player to ever experience a month-long dip in his form.

And the same fans expect loyalty from the players.

Without a doubt he needed to be upgraded.

He will never be a world class CB, which is ultimately what Conte & the club desires, in order to get ‘over the line’.

I think that some people have been desperate for Eric to have a bad run of games and for the team to lose so they can write the crap I’ve seen in this thread. The guy has played every game this season and clearly is knackered and needs to be rested. He’s been pretty much our best defender all season but let’s forget that and just that the last two games.

It's frightening despite the issues he has the drop off with a back up when he doesn't play is scary

Don't think it's that. He's shaky and when he gets s bit shaky he struggles to snap out of it.

If I was him I'd consider seeing a sports psychiatrist because he will have a run of solid displays but then seems to lose control of himself and the nerves creep in until he's got it out of his system.

Had a dip, could easily be a mix of fatigue, confidence and pressure of making WC which clearly is huge for him. He'll be fine, these calls to replace one of our standout performers for the past year are mental.

It’s more than likely different people saying the two things. I personally don’t think there’s been a wild swing in level of the player from poor before Conte to so important for us back to terrible again. He’s the same player he’s always been, Conte has just put players around him(probably to the detriment of the team)to minimise his actual defending and when he does have to do something he’s very passive, mistakes aren’t obvious apart from the last couple of weeks where the team looked tired and out of sorts and the shape a bit all over the place.

Whether you rate Southgate as a manager or not, he knows that position well. He’s obviously not convinced and we’re not exactly stacked in that area as a nation. players who could do his role he’s been given at the moment are ten a penny, we could get so much more from that position imo
