kind of funny that DIer is questioned often but has hardly ever been dropped in years especially from some of the top defensive minded managers.

think says more about our recruitment and players in that position that how he plays, Mourinho dropped him for a while but the alternative options were pretty bleak

Me - I do.

He's very good at the ccb role IMO. I'd go so far as to say he's made for it. He's a good passer with both feet, strong as an ox and has the mentality to cover for his cb partners. He is respected and viewed as a leader within the squad.

For balance, I'm sure he'd be awful as a cb in a back 4 where his lack of mobility would be exposed.

I know LOTS of very vociferous posters and fans don't like him but I'd point to the fact that not a single one of his past managers have tried to replace him. I am comforted by the fact that they know what they are talking about.

Some posters will cede that he CAN be ok, that he's very streaky and yet he is never replaced. Ever. If he's fit, he plays every game.

So, you may not like him, you may wish he was replaced, you may think that because there are many, noisy others who agree with you that you are right; but until you can explain why actual, world class managers, scouts and footballers disagree with you and have done over his entire career, you are a long way off dissuading me.
He can be very good but he’s also way too error prone and not reliable enough to start for us if we want to kick on.
We need better, he is good enough as a squad player but we absolutely need 2 quality starting Cbs at CCB and LCB.

Terrible. Hate how he strolls about all big chested but nothing to back it up. Tried a few through balls late but instead of putting weight and meaning behind he half arsed it likes a maestro and just lost possession

He has been OK this season but he only works in a 3 which is fortunate, but I would be seriously concerned in having him in a 2.

I actually think Romero is also better in a 3 but I do think he has a level of quality to him that Dier will not reach.

Dier has been a mainstay because we have not invested/developed well at all. If you look at our centre backs, who would make it into our rivals first 11? Romero only in my opinion.

We really need to be ruthless with that position. Tanganga, Sanchez, Davies and Lenglet are just not elite enough and Dier needs to join them. We need a defensive refit in the summer.

you could see Conte ticking him off for strolling out with it, and getting turned over, in the second half. Conte's system is all about not getting turned over or done on the break.

Squad player, a weak link against top quality and particularly a high press.

Our defence has been as bad as I can ever remember, under the tenure of two of the most successful defensive coaches ever to grace the game. Let that sink in Eric.

It's obviously the coaches who are to blame, don't you read posts on SC?

Every couple of weeks we convince ourselves that it will be fine if we retain this guy as a backup, but I just can't stick with that. Maybe he stays next year as we can't reasonably shift too many centre backs all at once, but if he's here at the start of the 24/25 season then we've really gone backwards.

Too many errors today. Almost seems to be scared to follow players and when 1v1 always lets the opposing player lead the situation.
