I don't really agree with the concerns about contract buyouts setting a bad precedent, mostly because I've always assumed it's a negotiated amount and not the full contract amount so there is some financial advantage to the club to negotiate a release. But maybe I'm wrong on that and I suppose a player could always refuse anything less than the full amount.
But it does really highlight why letting players get into the final year of their contract is awful squad management. Really need to sell or extend when they have two years left or else the club loses a lot of power. It's a big reason I wanted us to sell PEH and it's not as simple as "he'll be useful as a squad player to close out games."
