Not for me. The high line encourages balls over the top followed by a foot race. The low/mid block has defenders facing the attackers and being run at. Dier was very indecisive with that. he wouldn't engage, probably for fear of getting turned, and usually ended up backing off until the attacker got a shot off. we conceded loads like that.

Ange has them holding a high line, so it's more about chasing back in a footrace, whereas Conte had them standing still waiting for the oppoeition to come at them. Dier is pretty quick over 20m, but he isn't agile.

It’s different when you know and can prepare yourself for a foot race in one direction.
It is completely different when you have someone running at you with the ball, so you retreat, confront, when do you switch from one to the other. It’s why even quick defenders can look turgid when faced up in a 1 on 1 situation.

Dier isn’t quick, but he will be quicker starting high up the pitch and prepared to run back. He is god awful when squared up, trying to run backwards before fully committing to a lunge for the ball/player and being about a week late.

Mourinho and Conte's tactics invited relentless pressure. It was constantly back-to-the-wall defending. The sheer workload didn't help any defender, or LLoris. Under Ange (as with Poch), we have the ball a lot more and spend much more time attacking. Dier will be playing much higher up the pitch, where he looked so good for us in the Poch years

I just hope the pitchforks aren’t out for Dier before he has even kicked a ball, he needs to be judged on the merit of each game, not what has gone before.

I personally don’t think he’s good enough for where we want to be but right now he’s all we’ve got so we need to get behind him!

The worry for me with Dier isn't his pace, it's that he doesn't engage. He backs off repeatedly, whereas VDV and Romero tackle and stop the attack. He will however be handy when defending set pieces - something that VDV, despite his height isn't quite as good as.

I love Eric and hope he proves me wrong, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't concerned about him in this system.
