some very interesting comments from CE in this piece - also hopefully one can read into them a little that he is happy and, hopefully, will sign the new contract

And then the next year when it helps them not qualify for the Champions League it attracts those players to leave...

“I’d rather play in Europe than nothing,” said the Danish midfielder. “Of course there are many games but if you have a big squad like we have I think it shouldn’t be a disappointment to play in Europe. A lot of players want to be in Europe.

Sums up the right mentality. Play at the highest level possible.

The alternative is to finish outside of the EL places. How many players would want to leave then if we were perennial eighth to twelfth place finishers?

One season outside can do wonders for a team, almost won the Dippers the league (although Suarez helped)
Also wonder where Utd would be this season if they had a Europa campaign to deal with.

Asked myself the same question.
Safe to say it wouldn't have helped.

We all crave CL football. If we got EL again, we'd be experiencing the same problems with midweek and weekend matches as we would in the CL, albeit on a different schedule. We've just got to deal with it and try to strengthen the squad to cope with the increased number of games for whichever competition we qualify for.

The fact is the sports scientists have been saying for some time now that the human body needs 72 hours to recover from a game of football, and Europa League does not give players the recovery time unless a team is selected to play a Monday night televised match.
Champions League gives that recovery time in 2/3 games. and a Prem CL side will rarely play Weds/Sat.
