Cesc Fabregas fears his season could be over after suffering a suspected broken leg during Arsenal’s dramatic 2-2 Champions League draw against Barcelona at Emirates Stadium.
The Gunners skipper had been a doubt for tonight’s game after suffering severe bruising to his knee and leg during the Barclays Premier League game at Birmingham.
However, Fabregas returned to lead the side, and played a pivotal role in their comeback after falling 2-0 down to a brace from Zlatan Ibrahimovic looked to have all but killed off the tie.
During the closing stages, after substitute Theo Walcott had pulled a goal back, the Gunners skipper – who would have missed the second leg against his old club after being booked in the first half – was bundled over by Carles Puyol and awarded a penalty.
It was during that collision with the Barcelona captain, who was shown a red card by Swiss referee Massimo Busacca, that Fabregas suffered the latest problem which the Spain international believes could even end his season – and perhaps threaten a place at the World Cup.
"I am not good," said Fabregas, who left Emirates Stadium on crutches.
"We have to wait for tomorrow, but I hope I can wear the Arsenal shirt again this season.
"I fear the worst, which is that I have broken something.
"I do not think it is going to be good news, but still I hope there will be.
"When I took the penalty, I was quite strong, but after when I went to get the ball, I could not walk any more.
"It is the fibula. I think I put my leg between Puyol’s when I was fouled, and kicked it."
Fabregas added: "Until the penalty, I was feeling quite good.
"It has been an amazing experience and I will remember it for the rest of my life."

SSN running the story and also on sportinglife. Expensive night for Arsenal. If Arshavin misses the Derby too we're in with a massive chance.

Nothing wrong with him. Just wants to act like Arsene's little soldier.

April fools joke I reckon

Wenger has also said that Gallas "will be out for a while now" after a calf strain, and Arshavin has the same injury. REALLY expensive night for Arsenal if all are true.

Fabregas is a great player and I would want to see him at the world cup. Obviously him not being in Arsenal's team when we play them would be nicer than with him in, but I wouldn't want him to be injured, "cos he plays for Arsenal"

Some people are blinded - he plays for Arsenal, so he is automatically branded x,y,z . It simply isn't the case. He's a great player, a great role model for children and he should be respected - even if he plays for them down the road.

spitting at opposing managers isn't very respectable or role model worthy

Are you taking the piss? Fabregas has a serious nasty streak that has manifested itself on more than a few ocassions, as well as being a diver from time to time, which is probably the most shameful thing in the current world sport.

In addition, he chased the money and went to Arsenal at the age of 16 as opposed to staying with the club that taught him everything he knew and moulded him into the player he is today; if the message you want to send to children is 'fuck those who have created you, just sort yourself out my son,' then yeah, you're spot on

Hold on, i agree that he has a nasty streak that has manifested in the diving from time to time and that spitting incident.

But did he run for the money at Arsenal? I dont think we have any info to suggest that. On the contrary he could have gone back to Real or Barca or Chelsea for that matter for mega bucks.

Would he be the player he is now? Probably not whilst he had Xavi, Davids and Cocu in the first team, with Iniesta, Luis Enrique and Thiaggo Motta on the bench, all ahead of him. So did he make the right decision for himself? I think so.

On the final point of tonight's dive? I think not. The foul that Puyol made is pretty much impossible to dive for. It was a foul as it denied clear goal scoring opportunity.

All being said and done, im glad hes injured because I want us to hammer them into submission...But i would wanna see him at the world cup - both because he is a world class footballer

The money thing is something i have heard mentioned as the reason he left-Pique and his family fell out with the club hence his move to United, but that was all patched up and sorted out which is why he went back; Fabregas on the other hand has always been seen as a bit of a traitor and sell out by Barca fans if my memory serves me right, mainly because he wanted to sign pro terms at 16, which you cant do in Barca.

As for his actual career, i dont think it would have stunted his progression 1 bit-Barca love blooding their youngsters, and with Cocu, Davids and Enrique on the way out as he came to prominence, there is no doubt he would have been given game time-it didnt, and hasnt stopped the likes of Gio, Bojan, Pedro, Busquets etc, so theres no reason why it should have been an obstacle for him-at Barca, if you are good enough, which he clearly was, then you get your chance.
