Reading the Ledley love in thread got me thinking about the players I've respected most at the lane during my years as a supporter. Not neccessarily the best players, but the players whom through loyalty, personality or pure entertainment value I've appreciated the most. Here's what I came up with and why.....

Gk: Paul Robinson - Likeable guy, Englands No.1 and that goal.
DR: Paul Stalteri - Not the greatest player, but an absolute pro, worth it for the winner in that game against west ham alone.
DL: Timothee Atouba - Exciting, in a horror movie kind of way. You never knew whether to laugh or cry. Probably responsible for several heart attacks among some of the older faithful though.
DC: Gary Mabbut - Our rock at the back for over a decade despite being diabetic.
DC: Ledly King - I'd need a whole thread for Ledley http://www.spurscommunity.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=51560.
MC: Steffen Freund - Can't say he never tried.
MC: Paul Gascoigne - Fantastic player, absolute maniac, sad though whats happened in his life.
MR: Darren Anderton - Terrific servant to the club despite injury nightmare, and when he was at his best a terriffic player, a rare light during dark times.
ML: David Ginola - A pure entertainer, kept us in the PL under Gross and kept us awake under Graham.
CF: Gary Lineker - Loved him as a kid because of all the goals and the fact he came across as a nice guy. He still stands up for us on MOTD in the face of heavy liverpool bias.
CF: Teddy Sheringham - Proper Londoner, top bloke who always played with his head and showed a love for the club.

Thats my XI, I'd love to hear what players over fans were fond of.

Is this a thread for naming as many shit players as we can that we either remember with affection or willed them to succeed but knew they wouldn't?

Dunno, thought I'd just have a giggle as its really hard to name a favourite or a best 11 - we've had far too many greats to whittle down to 11.

I also find these threads tend to be too contemporary but maybe thats just the youngness of this newfangled interweb generation?

The one's who have made me stand up and admire, the one's who I was fond of eh?

Ok, let's give this a go.

GK: Gomes I know he hasn't been hear long, but I've not been a Spurs fan long enough to see a better goalkeeper then him, or who pulls off the saves that he makes. A few saves I will always remember from his first season were in the game at home against Chelsea, stunning save round the post, and then he jumped on the ball after it went out. Potential legend.
RB: Stalteri Same as you, gave his all, and will always be remembered for that wonder goal against the Spam.
LB: Disco Benny Not an area we've been blessed with good players in, and I have to admit I wasn't overly convinced in his first season, but I fucking love his hair!!
CB:Ledley King Well, as you said, there is a thread about how loved the man is, so it kind of speaks for itself.
CB: Gary Mabbutt The first name I ever got on a jersey. And I have his autograph from when I was younger. :)
LM: David Ginola I'm not ashamed to say I cried the day he left. He was the first player I properly idolised. I mean, properly, idolised. It used to piss me off when people slagged me about his hair ads!!
RM: Anderton This was tough, cos Lennon is fast becoming (No pun intended) one of my favourite players ever. Pity Anderton was always injured.
CM: Wil-son Pal-a-cios This guy is already a favourite isn't he?
CM: Do do do....Didier Zokora Well, I always loved the way he ran and ran and ran, I only wish he had been a marathon runner cos it would have got him somewhere. But really, he was a trier, and just once, I wish I could have seen him score a goal. I remember he nearly did, in the final against Chelsea. What a time that would have been to do it.
FW: Dimitar Berbatov Might get slated for this, but he was the man at the Lane for two seasons. His touch, his demeanor, the whole way he played the game, like nothing else, or no one else mattered around him. I hadn't idolised anyone since Ginola and then Berba came along. He is still, to this day, my favourite player to watch in a Spurs shirt.
FW: Teddy Sheringham Always remember the purple jersey I had with his name on the back. What a man, was absolutely gutted when he left for United, and I always think that he purposely missed that pen for the spammers when we should have gotten 4th.

my favourite is based on how i felt at the time not nessesarily how i feel now..and also when i've been old enough to really invest my emotions into the team. In retrospect Hoddle would walk into the team but i wasn't honestly aware enough to care about players like that before i was 12. Mabbut was close but Campbell was the first youth player of real quailty in my generation and nobody tops king so mabs is on the bench.

Torstved

Carr King Campbell Zeiger

Anderton Gazza Wilson Ginola

Klinsman Berbatov

btw this team would win the title

Gomes
Quality & Bollocks. A winning combination

Perryman
Mr Tottenham

Roberts
See Gomes. Bottomless courage but boy could this fella play

King
silkiest CB I've seen in our colours. Until he speaks.

Lee
should have been a cult hero but too many lemmings didn't realise how good this little fella was.

Modric
Ardiles
cut from the same cloth these two. Industry and poetry in motion.

Hoddle
The most sublime footballer I've ever seen. Elegant, graceful and yet devastatingly effective.

Galvin
A long way from the best winger I've seen in our shirt but come on, the fella had a degree in Russian FFS.

Clive Allen
The most lethal finisher I have ever seen.

Freddie Kanoute
Appearances can be deceiving. To the lemmings he was adead duck. To the rest of us he was Swan.

Robinson - England's number one, huge fan favourite and often a match winner in the start of his Spurs career with some of his performances.

Carr - Come on, he was a hell of a player for a decade. I've always made the point, at the time when he left Newcastle were in the Champions League so he was right to say they were the bigger club when we were mid table mediocrity. Hell of a right back.

Woodgate - Hell of a player, solid, calm, composed and doesn't get injured as much as he used to. Never forget being there for his cup final winner.

King - No words needed, he is the King.

Taricco - Passionate. Never had the best ability, but he was solid, got stuck in (when our team lacked bite) and always wore the heart on his sleeve. He absoloutely hated Chelski, and I absoloutely loved him for it with the amount of lunges of winding up he did.

Anderton - This was tough with Lennon. I think Anderton was a far better crosser, one of the best in the 90's, but he also had good strength and got stuck in. Good ol' 'Shwaaaggy'.

Modric - Awesome player, getting better by the game and the perfect link between midfield and attack.

Carrick - What a passer of the ball. Never put hard tackles in, but the amount of times he broke down opposition attacks and made incisive interceptions was incredible.

Ginola - Had absoloutely everything you could want from a winger.

Keane - I still feel he's very underrated by many fans. Over 100 goals and still counting, don't need much more of an excuse to pick Robbie.

Berbatov - Yes, he did the dirty on us and yes I could have picked someone like Sheringham, but Berba and Keano were magnificent together, so if a team would actually play together these two would be at the forefront for me.

For entertainment value I still look back very fondly on Timothy Atouba's time. He was actually a very skillfull footballer but just a little bit crazy. Fantasticly entertaining.
