Someone posted a link to Arsenal-mania (http://arsenal-mania.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=169882&start=2250) about some of the Arsenal fans being glad we beat United. I clicked the link, read it and took my dog for a walk. Came back home and hit F5 just to see that a debate about foreign fans had started and I just wondered how people here look at foreign fans.

The common sentiment on the Scum forum seems to be that you should support your local team and no other team and that foreign support hurts the local fans (i.e foreign fans occupying seats that should "rightfully" belong to a poor local kid).

I played football as a kid all through my youth and have always loved the game. Where I come from, northern Sweden, we don't really have any big football clubs, and pretty much everyone I know follows a Premier League team (mostly United, Arsenal and Liverpool, with a couple of people born in the 50's and 60's supporting 'Pool and Leeds). Of course we do follow our local team, which in my case plays in the local 4th division, which is as far away from being a professional league as you can come. I go to every match during the summers and know most of the players etc. But as I said, the Premier League has always been the league where I come from. We don't really follow the Swedish Allsvenskan, the nearest team being almost 600 kms away (so we follow hockey instead and do so with massive passion). In fact, it's cheaper and quicker for me to get to London than it is for me to get to my closest Allsvenskan game, with a bit of luck at least.

Anyway. I've followed Spurs since I was 7 (man-crush on Jürgen), and I consider myself a "real" (albeit foreign and not all that knowledgeable about all the finer aspects of everything) fan. My passion and my love for the club is real. I don't go to that many games, mainly cause I'm poor, got big loans and just started working after 6 years at university.

Anyway... enough about me. What's your, as proper local fans, view on foreign fans? Are we 'real' fans, or just glory hunters who hurt the club?

It always fills me with pride when i see Belgians, Norwegians, Dutch and other fans from across the globe at the Lane. Having spoken to a few of them in the pubs in the past, they're a credit to the club with their attitudes.

If people want to come from Norway or Holland or wherever to support the club, that's fine with me, I love the commitment that shows.

I am French and i am a member of the Swiss Spurs (as i live very close from the swiss border).
I am so happy to be a foreign fans and this is great to see Spurs supporters all around the world.
Just back from watching the game in Lausanne.
Sweyid, i suppose you're from Sweden....I know there a lot of Spurs fans in Scandinavia.
I am sure all british spurs fans are happy to know that there have been spurs fans in most parts of the world.

when i hear and see people coming from other countries to see us play it makes me feel great about our club, and at the same time i find it comforting that there are other grown men out there with an unhealthy obsession about a team of men in a pretty grimey part of London that i happen to have been born near!

I think it actually brings in to question anyone who dares query another's support for the club they both follow. They know nothing about that person and should, instead, stick to burning the energy on getting behind the team.

If you have a passion for my team then that's great, it doesn't matter where you come from!

I'm glad, but not surprised at all, that Spurs fans are more reasonable than Woolwich fans :)

If they support Spurs I feel closer to them than my next-door-neighbour, so I really couldn't care less where in the world they come from.

of course you want foreign fans. you want your team to be a global product - it means more money in the coffers.

Well money is obviously a plus, but for me it's great to see the Tottenham family growing as well. I've met Spurs fans in America, Italy, and Egypt (thanks to Mido and Ghaly!), and it's good to know that there are people all over the world that have an emotional attachment to the club.

I suspect some people feel that if you weren't born in the centre-circle in the middle of a game, with Chirpy acting as the midwife, you're not a proper Spurs fan.

Never heard Tottenham fans described as glory hunters

As for foreign fans the more the merrier, better for the club

Love our international support, it's great to find fellow Spurs fans when you're far from home and to meet up with people with different (and yet similar) opinions.
Don't know what those stupid Woolwich wankers are moaning about... this 'financial model' they're following is dependant on huge funds from overseas merchandising. :yuck:

Yeah but isn't the point about adopting the attitude/culture of the club? What would you say about a foreign fan praising an arse performance?

I am a proud South African fan by the way.

Im a Yank, but lived in London/Surrey from 1978-1983. I love Spurs - I even love them more than my alma mater - the Texas Longhorns. I'll pay for a subscription to ESPN Deportes to get two Carling Cup fixtures a year. I wont do that to watch a crappy Longhorns football game against Tulane or New Mexico State. I didnt grow up in north London, but I can tell you that when that fellow for Birmingham scored that wonder goal from 35 yards out a few years ago I was as gutted as anyone else. I went out to my garage and started cleaning it and my wife came out to check on me and all I could manage blurt out was ".....I dont know if I can take this shit!......" in between some nonsensical mutterings to myself. Ive never been that way with any other team I follow.

Dont care where you come from, as long as when you're at the lane you sing!
