Since our last serious push for 4th place under Jol in 2005/06 we have continued to play fairly well against top 4 sides but failed to do the bread and butter work that pushes you up the league - consistently beat poorer teams.
So far this season we have lost against the likely top 2 but beat everyone else often by a large margin. I am confident that we will pick up some points against the top 4 this season but at the end of the day are these games that important? They only amount to 24 point in the whole season and, while the games against Pool and Arse are likely to be 6 pointers (if we have any hopes of breaking into the top 4), I am convinced that its our results against the rest which will be critical.
We have been particularly poor against the bottom half of the table in recent seasons but there are encouraging signs that this is changing. We have real steel about our play now and are grinding out results too like against Birmingham and are consistently hammering poor sides. The Burnley result combined with previous results continued promising signs that we are ready to make a real push this season.
It could just be a patch of good form, but if that were the case I would have expected the wheels to come off after bad results against Man U and Chelski, particularly since Modric's injury. Instead we have picked up right where we left off
