Harry Redknapp faces defensive injury crisis as William Gallas ruled out for a minimum of three weeks

By Matt Barlow Last updated at 9:28 PM on 26th September 2010
Tottenham's injury crisis deepened when William Gallas was ruled out for at least three weeks.

Manager Harry Redknapp faces crucial games this week against FC Twente in the Champions League and Aston Villa in the League, with Sebastian Bassong his only recognised centre half.
Gallas became the latest player to be ruled out after tearing an abductor muscle in training on Friday, while Ledley King suffered a groin strain in the same session.

Blow: Gallas (right) was injured in the same training session as Ledley King

Redknapp is already without Michael Dawson, who injured his knee and ankle on England duty and will not be back before November, while Younes Kaboul is out with a hamstring injury. Jonathan Woodgate has not played for almost a year and is fighting to save his career.

At West Ham on Saturday, Bassong was paired in the centre with right back Vedran Corluka, who has been suffering from a bad back, and they struggled to form a convincing partnership as Spurs lost 1-0. Tom Huddlestone could be pressed into action as an emergency defender.

Redknapp does not expect to have Gallas available until after next month's international fixtures. If he heals quickly, he could be back to face Fulham before the trip to Inter Milan on October 20.

Injury-plagued: Spurs skipper King has gone down with a groin strain

The length of King's absence is more difficult to gauge. The Spurs captain pulled his groin in the first minutes of England's first World Cup game against the USA, came off at the break and did not play again in South Africa. It is a side-effect of the chronic knee problems which prevent him training normally.

Redknapp said: 'It's a blow. When you don't train, you pick up different injuries. If I went for a run tonight, I'd pull up with a calf problem because I don't train regularly. Ledley doesn't train and he picks up little injuries.'

Jermain Defoe is also out but Benoit Assou-Ekotto should return against FC Twente, releasing Gareth Bale to play further forward after he was forced into a more defensive role at Upton Park.

ffs.

I'm guessing Kaboul is a no-go too? Looks like it'll be Seb and Ledley then, who will move to right CB?

Everyone should bring their boots on Wednesday, some of us might get a game at this rate.

Same we can't recall Caulker. Throwing him in the deep end but he's looked impressive lately.

Could bring in Sandro, or bring him in and move Hudd back .. no wait, we decided it'd be best to register the injured Jamie O'Hara instead

Well now, just how utterly cack are our youngsters really?

Walker is on loan for the next month, just the time our injuries will be lingering around it seems. Still, we didn't have such a battle of the Somme look to our CB group then I suppose. Caulker - obviously nowhere near ready, even in emergencies, in Harry's mind, and who the hell are we to argue I guess. Naughton, is he still here? Throw him in, fuck this playing midfielders in defence if we can avoid it. I know Hudd has played there before but really, it would be nice to have at least a full time defender, with the requisite attributes a defender needs, in the back 4.

Two 20 yr olds, one of who is still here as the club we were trying to loan him to won't pay all his wages or something and an almost 19 yr old.

If they aren't thought highly enough of to keep around when we have a run of injuries/in case of emergencies, you have to wonder just how useful they are really. We're not talking about 17 yr olds here.

Makes the Caulker loan look really careless. One more injury to a CB and we'll be in big trouble.

My thoughts too. At this rate we may have to play Sandro more than expected - and I hope we do in the league and hoped we could do in CL too (ah well, let's hope Jamie may be able to board the plane for Europe at least, it'd be a good experience for him, eh). Walker seemed to be getting better with more playtime - and then we sent him away again, to leave ourselves with just Hutton at RB...Is this just bad luck or is it actually poor planning?

Anyway, Huddlestone may still be better at CB than Corluka atm, so Sandro could come in as the holding midfielder in the league with something like:

Hutton/Kaboul (if fit enough) - Huddlestone - Bassong - BAE
Sandro
Lennon - Modric - Bale
Van der Vaart
Pav

With GDS to replace Lennon for 2nd half if Lennon still doesn't improve, to make it 4-3-3 with GDS - VDV - Pav up front, while Sandro, Modric and Bale the 3 behind them. Obviously not for every game and not from the start maybe, but we have to try something different right now.

We couldn't register Sandro in place of O'Hara because of restrictions.

Could have registered Sandro instead of someone else though (not sure who to be honest, people were saying Hutton previously, but he'll probably play Wednesday night anyway!)

Oh well, this defensive injury crisis is a nightmare. Corluka at centre back again for the FC Twente game?

Are there any physios on here who can confirm my strong perception that resting players who're lacking fitness but not carrying injuries makes little difference to the chances of them picking up an injury and in fact if anything often increases the likelihood?
