KEVIN DOYLE: WOLVES ALMOST SIGNED LA LIGA MEGASTAR

Kevin Doyle has revealed that Wolves almost signed Gareth Bale from Tottenham in 2009.

Bale was struggling for game time at White Hart Lane in the early days of his career and he nearly secured a loan switch to Molineux.

However, in a cruel twist of fate Spurs cancelled the deal due to a first-team player picking up an ill-timed injury.

The Welsh international went on to become a La Liga megastar at Real Madrid after the Spanish giants splashed a staggering £85.3million to prise him away from White Hart Lane in 2013.

The attacker has gone on to win two Champions League titles, the UEFA Super Cup, the Copa Del Rey and the FIFA Club World Cup while Wolves have seen themselves drop from the Premier League all the way down to League One before stabilising in the second tier.

Republic of Ireland international Doyle spent six years on the books at Wolves between 2009 and 2015 and he is preparing to take on Bale when his side welcome Wales in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday.

“I remember he was nearly coming to us on loan in one of the transfer windows,” said Doyle, as quoted by the Daily Mail.

“That shows how far he has come in the last six or seven years. But I think that someone got injured at Spurs and the deal fell through.”

Doyle is currently plying his trade in the MLS with Colorado Rapids after his contract at Molineux expired at the end of the 2014/15 season.

The 33-year-old’s career has seen him play for Cork City, Reading, QPR and Crystal Palace before moving to the USA.

In other Wolves news, two high-profile managers are reportedly on the shortlist to replace Paul Lambert.
