Sky Sports News has been told that Lionel Messi has told Barcelona he wants to activate a release clause that would end his contract and allow him to leave for free this summer.

Barcelona have received this in writing via a fax from his lawyers. They have not officially replied yet but are understood to be preparing one.

Barcelona do not agree the clause is still active. It is said to have expired on June 10 - ten days after the original date of the Champions League final on May 30.

But Messi’s lawyers are arguing that - in the spirit of the deal and good faith - the clause is still active after the rescheduled final on August 23, which was delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Sounds like the clause might have been 'x days after the end of the season' or something like that.

Not going to lie, I'll be sad to see Messi leave Barcelona. He's one of those players who should be a one club man.

What if Messi just wants to try a different league? I know they'd rather keep him, but it seems extreme having a president of a football club step down to keep a 33 year old with probably 2/3 years left at the highest level when the rest of the team around him is in tatters.

Surely their fans can accept he gave them like 15 great years and now wants to move on, let the little **** go.

Unbelievable the amount of power he has at that club - Barca fans will be loving this.

Xavi also told he wont ever come to barcelona if this president stays .. Also puyol showing support to Messi on twitter ... Looks liks that president has burnt a lot of bridge ...
