Who will be our number one this year? Competition for places is one thing but I think it's generally accepted that succesful teams don't chop and change keepers during a season. I think i'm right in asserting that Cudicini has had more playing time this pre-season. Is that simply because he needs it more than Gomes or is harry planning to start the season with him?

Cudicini has played more because Gomes was on international duty with Brazil. Harry is juggling both of them at the moment. I'm guessing Gomes will start tomorrow.

I'm hoping Gomes will start but who knows what Harry thinks? Gomes was solidly #1 last season, so i'd guess so long as nothing changes in training, that will continue.

Still not as sold on Gomes as many.

For me he had one atrocious half season and one very good half season...Im not sure which is the real Gomes.

I have a feeling before the end of the season we might see Cudicini between the sticks. I hope Im wrong because he really was quality at the end of last season. I still feel uneasy about him though.:-|

Gomes I hope. We saw the real him in the second half of the season, pulling off a few of great saves against Chelsea and United. As well as that, he got rid of the mistakes.

Atrocious is very harsh. Although if that's your definition then you could have considered the whole team atrocious during that period.

He took a while to settle, and given the rotation of CB's in front of him and switch of GK coach, combined with the language issue it was hardly suprising he didn't fit straight in.

Also Gomes' style is to command his box and come for everything. Which is part of the reason he's a great keeper.

However for that to work he needs to have an understanding with his defenders, which he had at PSV and which he now has at Spurs, but didn't have when he joined.

The second half of his season showed what he could do when settled, and there's no coi-incednce that he's Brazil's 2nd choice keeper behind Julio Cesar who is one of the top 5 keepers in the world.

Cudicini is a great back-up keeper and would do a decent enough job as first choice, but he can't be compared to Gomes.

Why's Harry giving him a run at the moment - firstly because of Gomes' international duties this summer and secondly cause he wants Cudicini to be happy and to think he has a decent chance of taking that number 1 slot.

I reckon Gomes could easily be the fans favourite player by the end of this season.

Shouldn't even be a contest. Yes Gomes had a shocking start but he more than made up for that during the rest of the season.

He was the keeper in a team that conceded less than any team in the league at home...it would be daft to replace him with Cudicini.

I always thought the 'mistakes' by Gomes were very much overblown. For every genuine mistake he made, he pulled off at least 2 cracking saves that good keepers would struggle with. If he never made the mistake but didn't make the good save later, the nett result would be the same, but noone would complain. I struggle to see how most people call them mistakes (like the Fulham goal, for example). You can't save them all, a ball will slip through your hands eventually.

Gomes made absolutely outstanding saves all throughout the season. He's an awesome keeper and i'm glad we still got him. He's always said he wants to go back to PSV but hopefully not soon.

Cool. I know that Gomes has been on international duty so probably doesn't need the time that Cudicini needs. I was actually asking with relation to my fantasy football team. With everyone fit, I actually expect us to not concede too many so wondered who might start. I too hope Gomes is no.1.

Cudcini was crap in games against Hull and Bolton when he had pressure put on him from crossess in the box, so it wasn't just Gomes.

Cudicini IMO is the best backup we could hope for. I didn;t vote for him, but felt bad. So you know...
