Portsmouth Football Club has been issued with a winding-up petition by HM Revenue & Customs, the BBC has learned.

The petition was presented on 23 December, but a full court hearing will not take place until February.

If the club is unable to strengthen its financial position by then, the club could be declared bankrupt.

Portsmouth has been the subject of much takeover speculation and has reportedly been unable to pay some player wages in recent weeks.
The club currently lies bottom of the Premier League and has recently appointed ex-Chelsea manager Avram Grant to try to revive its fortunes on the pitch.

etc etc

Cant say id be to bothered if they disappear of the face of the planet (although not likely).

They have some good support but they've always annoyed me greatly.

its always sad to see a football club fall apart, especially one as old as portsmouth, but it does highlight the potential problems of 'buying the dream' and of dodgy ownership, maybe if this does happen then the FA will finally put in place a proper fit and proper person test to stop this sort of things happening

wonder if we are one of the clubs that is owed money by pportsmouth fc?

although saying that im sure it'll all get sorted, on teamtalk someone on their board were saying that they hoped to get the transfer ban lifted next week and things were looking up

A winding up petition won't necessarily finish them off and they're normally used to chivvy a company into paying up (particularly where HMRC and bigger companies are concerned).

It does suggest however that Pompey have seriously hit the skids and if they go down, and go into administration then it could really be the end for the club in terms of the top flight in the next decade.

Still...at least they can ask their neighbours how to deal with it.

From Pompey's official website, seems to be it will all be resolved amicably regardless of the damning headlines earlier - its just a VAT dispute which is very common

PFC Statement

Portsmouth Football Club has not been formally served with a winding up petition and is shocked and surprised this action has been taken in respect of VAT, PAYE and National Insurance Contributions which either have been, or are about to be paid, or are disputed.

The club is disputing the VAT amount outstanding and has formally notified HMRC of this. We expect HMRC to withdraw their demands forthwith.

Otherwise we anticipate a hearing being held in early January 2010 during which we will request that the High Court order HMRC to withdraw their demands.

Since the takeover by Ali Al Faraj in October 2009, extreme efforts have been made to reach payment arrangements with HMRC to allow the owner time to deal with inherited debt.

To date the new owner has injected a total of £9.7m of new funds to HMRC - £5.7m paid and security to the value of £4M.

In such a tough economic environment the club finds it hard to understand this action by HMRC.

It is well known that the business has been in a difficult position following former owners’ decisions and the current owner is committed to resolving this and moving forward.

I'd say Jamie O'Hara back at Spurs then and unless all the KPB money was in the other transfers done him too.

We surely settled everything with the KPB & Crouch & O'hare loans/transfers?

surely nothing is still owing?

Am pissed. Quarter to two. Am angry that there's a grammatical error in their statement. FIRST LINE. Ten point penalty for that.

I can not see where all this dislike for Portsmouth comes from, I would much rather see West Ham, Bolton, Hull, Wigan go down

I am really suprised to read about the dislike for Portsmouth from people on this forum. Okay our club is in a great shape both financially and otherwise, but it seems a bit pathetic and mean spirited to wish the demise of another club. If they beat us occasionally or out chant us on occadions, so what? Its part and parcel of the game. By this weird logic and precident it would mean that all other clubs bar Spurs should go broke and go down. :duh:.

We can be very arrogant at times so let us hope its not us one day in the shit clinging for our dear lives for top flight football. If you think it cannot happen to us, ask Nottingham Forest who were the best in Europe and one of the best run clubs, only twenty odd years later where are they now?

Yup nobody should be pleased at the financial demise of a football club as it's a sign of where the game is going. The more teams that disappear the financial plughole, the more it'll ruin the league as a whole so I hope Pompey sort it out.

As has been mentioned if a Premier League club goes under then the FA/Premier Leage will seriously have to start thinking about what to do to make football more stable. It's all very well the top clubs being financially okay, but if the teams they play against week in week out all go bust then there won't really be much point to the game.

You reap what you sew. Pompey gave it lemon and now we're laughing.

I don't want them to go out of business, I do want them to drop down the leagues though.

I'd be more than happy to see the financial demise of Arsenal or Chelsea, especially Chelsea who got the vast majority of support they have now when Abramovic came in.

What's the difference between Pompey's situation and Chelsea's? very little for me.

Pompey spent big, propposed up by Gaydamak's money. When the recession hit, Gaydamak withdrew his support and Pompey have been double fucked ever since. If Abramovic had done the same, Chelsea would've collapsed too.

Pompey were only where they were due to Gaydamak's money.

It's a very good post and a very good point. I don't htink as a fan of the game you could wish that much ill on another club. I don't wish the extinction of Chelsea or Arsenal. Yeah, it would be great at the time and we'd all have a laugh at their expense - but a year or two later, when we've not got the North London Derby to look forward to, what's the point?

I wish Arsenal continued business operation. And that's about as much goodwill as I'm prepared to offer; enough to see them play us every year (and lose). Hehe.

As for Portsmouth, I really don't understand the disgust towards them. They've happily taken our seconds whilst we've plundered their first team for all levels of players and management. They've been very much a feeder club for us! They also have a cracking set of fans that really religiously go to the games. Yeah they've got those fucking bells, but good on them.

I'm off my soapbox now, I just thought that we needed some more 'football' fans views.

Mine is based on an irrational hatred of the entire place due to a very unhappy time spent there.

What is this 'football' you speak of?
