Like many people no doubt, I just wish I could have seen Jimmy play at the peak of his powers. An absolute legend. Through the years my father has said to me about numerous players that they "weren't a patch on Jimmy Greaves" to the point where I figured that no one was as good, and no one ever would be!

I've only ever seen the clips of him in action. What a class act. One goal I seem to recall is one where he crossed the ball in (from the left I think) and had then run around the 18 yard box to end up finishing the move off! Amazing.

Fully deserves his WC medal, but should have had it years ago. Legend!

It's also worth stating that he was a footballer as well as a goalscorer.

He took a brilliant corner, scoring from at least one.

I remember seeing him in his last season at Spurs, when he had lost his killer pace, running the game from midfield as we won 2-0 at Palace, his range of passing was superb.

His dribbling skills were legendary, and set him apart from typical poachers like rush and linéker (though they had strengths JG lacked)

We are lucky we have his wonder goal v man u for posterity, he scored an even better one v leicester - I was lucky enough to be there - but it's lost to future generations alas

Oh and he was a gentleman on the pitch, and a real character. A classic cheeeky Cockney chappie.

So JG, be the big man, and join our hall of fame, it needs you greatly.

Liverpool at home, either 1967 or '68 if I remember correctly. Gerry Bryne and Chris Lawler were the defenders along with Tommy Lawrence (nicknamed the flying pig) in goal. It was scored at the Park Lane, where I was standing. I remember the incident like it was last week, and recall practising what he did for months and months on end....

Happy days sherborne.

I remember an FA Cup tie round about that time v pool

Long punt up from big pat, gilly flicking it on, greavesie just about to be sandwiched by two pool defenders, but just enough time to shoot, the ball flies in from over 20 yds

a rare long ranger from greavesie, but he had that in his locker too

eg his classic in the cup semi v forest in 67

Greavsie' was worthy of a medal far more than the likes of Bonneti/Hunter etc as he actually contributed to the qualifying & winning in 66'

Agree that his half time interview was classic Jimmy....certain he believed it when he said him & the other 66 squad members could have beaten Andorra... 'though recall some of his 44 England goals came against similar class of opponents....

That goal against Manu is better than anything I've seen from George Best, and Jimmy scored so very many others like it. The greatest British player I've seen, so that goes back 40+ years.

Mind you, have you ever seen video of Stanley Matthews? Remarkable agility. Some of those old players had skills that were amazing even by today's standards. I read about a Spurs player - Tommy harmer I think - who was very slight but amazingly skillful. Apparently he grew up on a chicken farm and one of the things that made him so quick and lithe was constantly chasing and catching chickens. Billy Nick dropped him for an FA cup semi before Spurs did the double, and Spurs lost. Danny B blamed that for Spurs defeat - said too many British football people didn't value pure skill highly enough. And Danny B had the highest respect for Billy Nick, especially by the standards of the day. Jimmy G was a typical Spurs player. Shame he never joined us from school; we would have won four doubles on the trot if he had.

Also don't forget his all-time record of 357 goals in the top flight of English football

that won't be broken any time soon, if ever

Also he spent time in Italy and retired at 30 and a piss head!!
