I think we've got to be careful when assuming that big players at big clubs are on big wages. It's not always the case.

Ozil, for instance, probably wasn't on as much as you'd think at Real. Why? Because he came from Werder where he probably would have been on £25k p/w. If Real came knocking, they could quite easily have offered him £50k a week and he'd still have joined. So when Arsenal came knocking and offered to triple his wages to £150k p/w, he said "Thanks very much".

With the same logic, young players like Bender, Kroos and Muller (all 24 yrs old), may have signed £50k or £60k contracts a couple of years back, which would have been a lot for a 21/22 yr old. However, if Spurs come along and offer £120k p/w, this will definitely make a player think about it. Will their own clubs offer them a contract like this any time soon? Will the player get injured in the near future? Will a better player force them out of the squad? We've all seen big players fall from grace.

There are reasons that a perceived 'big' player could end up at a perceived 'lesser' club.

Was it GF who promised to explain the various areas of responsibilities of AVB, Baldini, Freund and Sherwood after the dust has settled on the transfer window?

So far there doesn't seem to be any such posting by any of our ITKs.

"my fear is that unless this could be done under the radar then we will lose out to one of the big boys."

I think this sentence implies to me that it's not Saurez. He had a lot of media attention this summer. I think it's more likely someone nobody would expect to be available hence the high chance of us getting sabotage by a bigger club if our interest in said player became known. I am not sure Saurez would be available to us for 50 mil anyway, pool would prob be looking for a lot more then that.

GF said that the club was amenable to the deal, given the statements made by John Henry over the summer it is difficult to imagine any circumstance in which Liverpool would have been willing to sell Suarez to us. If they categorically and publicly rejected Arsenal's bid of 45m, why would they turn around and sell to their other major rival for fourth for only 5m more? I agree that from a footballing perspective Suarez is a perfect fit for us but it does not add up.

If it's not Draxler then I'm stumped as to who else it might be but the important takeaway for me is that there is more money to spend. Even if this particular deal doesn't come off we should still be able to go in for the likes of El Shaarawy or Pato, perhaps a shade beneath that 50m bracket but players that would require a big investment and could take us up a level to genuine title contenders. With the drama unfolding at Stamford Bridge maybe we could even go for Mata, but it's hard to see them selling to us when they've just spend nearly 35m simply to deny us a player.

True, I was really referring more to El Shaarawy with that and threw in Pato as an afterthought but the point remains that he'd be an expensive acquisition with the potential to have a huge impact for us.

On another note I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories but I wonder if A&C may be poo-poo'ing the Draxler shout simply to prevent a consensus being formed that he's the target and our cover for such a sensitive deal being blown. With his potential he is worth the fee and Shalke would sell at that price. We were told that the deal would be "jawdropping" and he makes more sense than any of the others that have been touted, IMO. Otherwise I honestly can't think of who it might be.

You could play Suarez on the wings, I don't know about Falcao. He is in a different class to Soldado, but I don't know that we would drop 80m on strikers in one year, only to ever play 1 of them. I also don't know why Suarez would want to stay, as he was ready to head off to Arsenal. We are still an upgrade on Liverpool. It is possible that he could be waiting to see how the table is come January, but I really think it is someone else.

Not Draxler, eh?

Iniesta is still alive!

...Ok, I'll see myself out.

But for real though? Please can it be him?

No doubt Suarez is a top class player but I would find it hard to cheer him on. He's a horrible person who would no doubt do well here, but I'd hate to see somebody like that pulling on a shirt of the club that I hold so dear.

Can't see us paying £50m for a 29 year old...

I would pay £50m for Iniesta! He still has 3-4 years at the top... Miles ahead of anything we have! Never get a penny back though :)

I made this post 5 hours ago but my laptop froze:mad:

That article said Draxler had a £38million release clause and even that is high for imo.

£50 million is a lot of money in that bracket you have to be a one assist or goals in 2 games player or even Better. We sold Bale for €100million because he was a one goal or assist per game player, in his last 14 league games he got 12 goals and 5 assists. But also we have to account that he had a long contract and that he was becoming a brand bringing in high revenue himself. Also worth noting that attacking players are only in this price range as they win matches on their own.

Now taking that to account:
Luis Suarez - £50million is high for a player who is a PR nightmare and is a handful but the player is at the right calibre for this type of player
Marco Reus - I dont think he is a £50million player as he isnt a great player yet and dont think he would come, Dortmund probably wouldn't sell but for £50mill would lol
Benzema - £25million max imo and that is high
Falcao - £51million player and rumours of Monaco looking to move him on, worked with AVB and not been linked. Though wages may be a issue and so will his apparent age which has denied which says he maybe 29.
Ibrahimovic - His wages are beyond are means unless a big chunk of that £50mill goes to him
Rooney - He isnt a £50million pound and same as above imo
Mata - We have been linked with him but he is an amazing player and Chelsea unlikely to sell
Vidal - we have plenty in his position but apparently Juve wanted just under £50mill for him

Interestingly TransferMarket values only 6 players on or above the £50mill mark;
Messi, Ronaldo, Bale, Cavani, Falcao and Iniesta

I think Falcao is the only one that could cost £50million tbh

I think it needs to be someone that plays LW. We have a big name in the cf spot and in the RW spot. Our no. 10 seems settled, and our cm position is deep. The only big money spot without a big name is the lw.

That would leave us with Mata, Hulk, Suarez and Rodriguez who I could see breaking that money and being potential players for us. I would throw out Suarez for the reasons I stated previously in the thread. El Shaarawy is a possibility, but I don't see him going for that much, and Reus is a dream, but the longest of shots.

Reus is on par with Bale, if not better. Would be worth every penny of £50m IMO.

And stop mentioning mata because grey fox has already said in his thread it's not him.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Mata in the january window. Mourinho obviously doesn't rate him, and I can't see him accepting a bit part role at Chelsea in a World Cup year.
