FERGIE'S POY WONDER
OLD TRAFFORD SENSATION: Sir Alex wants to poach Tottenham No.2 Gus in the frame to replace Queiroz
By Steve Bates
Sir Alex Ferguson has identified Tottenham coach Gus Poyet as a shock contender to replace Carlos Queiroz as his new assistant.
The former Chelsea and Spurs midfielder, now No.2 to Juande Ramos at White Hart Lane, is under major consideration by Ferguson as the Manchester United chief looks to fill the void after Queiroz left to take over as boss of Portugal.
Fergie's interest in Poyet will be met with fierce resistance from Tottenham who see him as a key figure in Ramos' regime.
But if Ferguson offers the Uruguayan the chance to play a major role in United's defence of the Premier League and Champions League, he will be faced with the toughest decision of his career.
Poyet is well liked and respected in the game and Ferguson has been impressed with the way he's conducted himself since retiring as a player in 2004.
After a short spell as player/coach at Swindon under former Chelsea team-mate Dennis Wise, the duo went to Leeds - and started an impressive revival at Elland Road.

Poyet was credited with being the tactical brains behind Leeds' recovery and he was snapped up by Ramos in October last year shortly after the Spaniard took over from Martin Jol.
Ferguson has compiled a short-list of potential replacements for Queiroz and Poyet is high on the list. Although current No.3 Mike Phelan has sound credentials to step up as Fergie's right-hand man, the United chief has told close friends he needs an assistant with European experience.
He's not ruled out Phelan, academy director Brian McClair or skills coach Rene Mulensteen if he decides to promote from within.
Ex-Liverpool coach Paco Ayesteran, who left Anfield last season after a bust-up with Rafa Benitez, has been mentioned as have Bordeaux boss and former United star Laurent Blanc and ex-Chelsea No.2 Steve Clarke.
Poyet played seven years for Real Zaragoza where he gained a good knowledge of the Spanish game and he's also a devotee of South American football, having won the Copa America with Uruguay in 1995.
He enjoyed an impressive playing career in England, where he scored 49 goals for Chelsea in 145 games, and has gone on to develop impressive coaching and tactical skills.
United could easily top his £525,000-a-year salary at White Hart Lane - but Spurs will fight hard to keep him if United come calling.
After a disrupted summer with the Cristiano Ronaldo transfer saga, Ferguson didn't need the added blow of Queiroz leaving.
The United boss and his stars fly to South Africa on Thursday to start a four-game tour that ends in Nigeria.
And by the time he returns to Manchester on July 28, Ferguson will want a new lieutenant by his side to plot another season of glory.

Stupid media. If he did go we could do an Arnesen and say they can't do business with us for two years, no Berbatov! They wouldn't be that stupid, we have a great bargaining position and Gus seems to love the job here.

We need to establish our selves as a top side this year, one that would not be expected to deal with other top sides in our league and shut the media up.

After all they wouldn't bother linking an Arsenal player with Man U because they know Arsenal wouldn't sell to them.

We really need an outstanding season (like Ramos had with Sevilla) to shake up the top 4 and change our perception in the medias eyes (as well as the eyes of the top clubs) So that there be no more Michael Carrick or Frank Arneson situations.

(or atleast limit the links to them, I know no one is immune to such events look at Peter Kenyan)

Peter Kenyon is scum who should arrange a hot airballoon ride, with David Dein and Rupert Murdoch, over an active volcano.

Ferguson is definitely after a Latin speaking (Spanish/Portuguese) coach and the obvious candidate is Gus.

When did we decided to become United feeder club. As soon as they glance in our direction we start panicking.

I like the way the guy's written it as if Fergie's stood looming over the entire football world leering down thinking 'Oooh, I'll have THAT ONE' and automatically has a new assistant...

It's really just a smoke screen. Fergie is going to announce Ramos as the number 2 at manUre... doubled up with Berbatov arriving for 5 mil... and Ledders on a free... :bang:

I like the balloon/volcano idea mentioned earlier in this thread.

it says that 'Ferguson didn't need the added blow of Queiroz leaving.'

If i was Poyet I'd be calculating which club I have the best chance of being in charge of within the next few seasons. No chance at Utd. Every chance with us. Especially - and I hate to say this - if Ramos brings us any degree of success, if that happens a big club will be in for him and we'll be looking for a new head coach.

The Sunday News of the Times Exclusive:

Chelsea in shock Spurs Swoop!!

Chelsea Boss Phil Scolari is looking to make his highest profile and most controversial signing to date, and his target is going to infuriate London rivals Tottenham.

The SNoT can exclusively reveal that Scolari has identified Spurs mascot 'Chirpy' as the key figure to spearhead the club both on (the side) and off the pitch. The move is seen as an ideal way for the club to enhance its public image both at home and abroad, and Chirpy's signature is likely to bring commercial benefits as well.

As much as Spurs would be loathe to lose their star man, its unlikely that they would be able to compete with Chelsea's offer of 4 tonne of chicken feed.

Ever since Roman Abramovich bought the club, and his managers have settled for dull, boring, defensive football, attendances have steadily declined and it is thought this type of acquisition could re-establish the link between the players and the scum, sorry, fans.

Other targets include the Man Utd Red Devil, the Arse*** Whinging Frenchman, and West Ham Tool.

Gus was very quick to say that keane would stay - I wonder how quick he will be to say that about his future. Not very I'd imagine
