71 today and I hope he's having a good birthday.

Those of us who saw him play know just how special he was.

My dad always tells me this one story about Greaves.

Apparently Greaves retired and took whatever pro footballer pension/pay off players received in them days but then played in a friendly/testimonial game against Arsenal for us some time later.

Apparently he was sensational, scored 4 goals and generally tore Arsenal a new one in the game.

Spurs wanted to resign GReaves out of retirement but he was refused permission to become a professional footballer again on account of having taken the retirement pay off (which spurs offered to pay back but were refused)

I have to say, like many of my dads old stories I often wonder if this is true or some hear say he picked up along the way and repeated as fact. Perhaps someone old enough to remember those times can set me straight on this issue.

Anyway, happy birthday to the big man a true Spurs legend, heres to many more.

I'd bet that if he was playing today he'd still make scoring goals look easy!

Happy Birthday Greavsie!

Happy Birthday Jim

and yes, he was that special. If he could just lose a few kilos he'd still score more than JD & Crouchie.

The guy could spin on a sixpence, leave defenders in his wake and then go on to score an unbelievable goal after doing nothing for the previous 45 minutes. When on form, absolutely unstopable.

Probably the finest striker EVER to have worn the Spurs shirt

I've seen some great players and some incredible goalscorers. I place Jimbo and George Best at the top of the list.

I can only compare them to sharks going in for the kill. They both knew exactly where to be, left opponents wrong-footed and stumbling and knew exactly how and where to place the perfect shot.

Single-minded and lethal.

Yeh , I don't know what all this is about... He was with us for 8 years
a long term Spurs player . Its a madness that theres a problem between us and this absolute legend after all these years .

Anyone know why ?

I remember hearing him on the radio saying he had a dispute with the club about money they paid (or should I say didn't pay) to their ex players. Basically he felt the club were not looking after their ex players well enough and he took exception to it.

As far as I remember anyway.

Who was the better finisher/goalscorer? greaves or Romerio?

I'm too young to have ever seen Greaves play and highlights of him are few and far between really, my dad raves about him still as did my granddad before he passed.

With my own eyes the greatest striker at the Lane has been Klinsmann, then Berbatov followed by Sheringham and Linkeker....my dad insists Greaves was head and shoulders above the lot of them (praise indeed)

When I was growing up there were four superstars in England - Greaves, Charlton, Best and Law.Greaves was generally considered the best, and that does include Best. Moore, Hurst and Peters, great though they were, were at the next level. The Man Utd thing since then seems to have elevated Best above Greaves, but that's not how it was seen at the time.

Greavesy will always be a legend, but I'm not too sure about his personality.
