Harry hits the mark

Harry Kane's second-half goal secures Elite Round victory over Montenegro.

England U19s got their European U19 Championship Elite Qualifying Round fixtures off to a winning start on Tuesday evening, as Harry Kane's goal proved enough to see off the challenge of Montenegro.

The Tottenham Hotspur forward, who spent time on loan with Leyton Orient last season, notched what proved to be the winner in the 51st minute of the game when he latched onto a tidy through ball from Thomas Ince before placing a first-time shot past 'keeper Damir Ljuljanovic.

Noel Blake's side were unfortunate not to have added to their tally too, as they found Ljuljanovic in sparkling form throughout the game. He denied Kane a second goal shortly after the first strike and made a number of stops to keep midfielder George Thorne off the scoresheet.

The other match in the group ended in a 2-1 win for Spain over host nation Switzerland, leaving England in second place by virtue of goals scored.

Only one team from the group will progress to the European Championship Finals in Romania, so the battle for top spot will continue on Thursday afternoon when the Young Lions face Switzerland in Nyon

Surely he's going to get a bit of match-time in the Uefa league next season. I'll be honest, I'd rather have him up top than Defoe at the moment.

Oof, England in the same group as Spain with only one team progressing? Unlucky!

But good to see Harry making his mark.

I sincerely hope we get to see more of Kane next season but I would be surprised if he wasn't sent out on loan for the majority of it - preferably to a club in the Championship but one where he would hopefully get a lot of game time.

Yeah, gritty one that!

Spain don't half have the wind in their sails at the moment eh?

Not like during the Spanish Armada though! Have some of that Phillip II!

Bit crap that only one team goes through, but good to see Harry scoring. Still think he needs to improve a little more before he's ready for us, either find half a yard of pace or build a bit of bulk to compete in the PL, but he certainly seems to have a pretty good footballing head on his shoulders.

I think he needs a season of football first, but it needs to be at the right club, and he needs be play (not sit on the bench)

We could play him in CC, Europa and the odd 10 mins here and there in PL games just to see how he's progressing, and if need be, send him on loan for 6 months when the January window opens.

I saw the game between England and Spain u-19's yesterday and his goal was a poacher's goal, England started with a 4-4-2 and then reverted to a 4-5-1, kane played as a winger in the second formation but it was hard to comment on him as Spain controlled the game. England were really poor, but Kane did well some good running into positions but England's passing was clumsy and terrible. One player who caught the eye was Spain's Isco, similar to David Silva and scored a great freekick.
