10 minutes to go, the game is carefully poised at 1-1 after Mane cancelled out a Danny Rose 30 yard volley. Kane is warming up.
The ball rolls out for a goal kick and Poch makes his final change, Lucas for Kane. Spurs pile on the pressure, inspired by the figure of their vice captain throwing himself recklessly around the pitch as part of a massive team press.
Dele picks up the ball on the edge of the Liverpool box and slips it through to Kane who surely can't miss!....but he slashes it wide.
That was the chance.
The ensuing goal kick is long and high, Toby looks up but the ball is hidden in the floodlights, it sails over his head and puts Salah through 1 on 1 with Lloris! The Egyption bobs and weaves trying to make the Frenchman commit first but Salah stumbles over his feet as he tries to pass Lloris and falls over dramatically. The Spurs contingent let out a mighty roar, but the ref blows his whistle.
He reaches for his pocket.
Red. Penalty.
The crowd is stunned, the players call for a VAR review but it doesn't come.
With no substitutions left Spurs are forced to use an outfield player in goal. Kane knew this and has been busy procuring gloves in the chaos. Lloris whispers some parting words to him on his journey down the tunnel and Kane takes his place in goal deep into injury time.
James Milner places the ball down and steps back, Kane doing his best to put him off. Milner strikes the ball, Kane dives to his right, the ball goes to his left...but its off the post! The rebound is kind to the Liverpool man but Kane is quick to his feet and catches the attempt.
He boots it long to Son who has been hopeful of a counter and his gamble paid off. A Clever touch nutmegs Van Dijk and puts only Alison between him and a Champions League medal. Son shoots but the Brazilians fingertips sends it out for a corner. The Lillywhites set up as normal and Trippier, who has been man of the match so far, shapes up to take it.
A roar ripples among the crowd.
Rose is waiting on the halfway line and feels the hair on his neck stand up as a streak of purple flies past him.
Trippier curls the ball towards the penalty and Kane, who hasn't broken stride since his departure from his box, leaps.
His head connects.
Alison dives.
Goal.
They've done it.
VAR disallows it.
