The fact that they may not remain successful doesn’t mean they aren’t better run than us. They aren’t even one of the biggest 20 clubs in the country, just being in the PL is a sign of being well run. Being above us is exceptional, and it’s because they a clear plan and stick to it

They have good patches where they punch above their weight, as arguably we have done in the past, under Harry and Poch.

Admittedly clubs like Swansea, Southampton and Brighton, who have all been flavours of the month at various points are much smaller than us. But clubs like Aston Villa- a new candidate for flavour of the month around here - and Everton are not, at least not historically.

It's not that their is no truth in pointing out that a club like Brighton is getting a lot of things right but it's the constant hyperbole about how well run these other clubs are that grates. I bet you would get a different story on their forums from their fans, depending on when you asked them. I mean remember the infamous Everton going for the top four thread?

He was playing with an injury last season which would explain the drop-off.

I just don't see how you can give the captaincy to Bissouma over him when he's only been here a year and hasn't performed consistently yet.

I'm a huge fan of Biss too btw.
As someone else has just said, Son Is a great ambassador for the club and nice person. I just don’t see captain-like traits from him on the pitch (same as I didn’t with Hugo). I always believe it should be someone who will always be involved in the game and ideally someone who will be closest to the referee most often and who will ball out their team mates rather than just throw arms around in frustration.

edit: last post from me on next captain as seen there’s a chat thread on this

It won't get said much in here but kudos to Levy.

100-120m quid for a 30 year old with one year left on his contract who doesn't want to be here and we don't have to see him in another PL team.

Good work I say.

Now full steam ahead with him undoing all that good work by spending it on garbage.
And the majority of it upfront too.

Arguably they only did managerial succession planning very well once. Potter to de Zerbi.

not sure it was the same well thought out pre-planned approach from Garcia to hyppia to Hughton.

Getting Potter to start i think they should also get credit for given the success he was. And it's not just managers, its the playing squad also.

Prior to that they were stuck in the Championship trying to find a way out for years, I'm not going penalise them for not running things in the way they do at the moment, for the obvious reason that they didnt have the same resources, but you can if you want i guess.

Why? All the teams that everyone here is terrified of, like Arsenal, Man U, Newcastle, Liverpool, Brighton and Aston Villa, didn't have a single player who scored more than 19 goals last season. Brighton's highest league goal scorer was Mac Allister with 10.

In the right system, players like Richarlison, Son, Maddison and Kulusevski should be able to get near to the sort of numbers top scorers like Callum Wilson (18), Ollie Watkins (15) and Marcus Rashford (17) contributed to their teams last year. If they all fail to do so, I'll be very disappointed. But don't judge them on last season.

Because relying on the hypothetical that other players will suddenly produce, and do it without Kane and without an alternative to Kane is beyond risky.

Don't judge them on last season, you say? Why not? What if they don't deliver, just like last season?

What I'm advocating is to at least have an alternative in case that plan doesn't pan out.

The players on the transfer list are worth at least £50m combined. And players like Sessegnon and Gil who are injured are players we can shift in January and we could easily generate another £30m.

No reason we shouldn't be spending another £150m or so this window.
Honestly if we sell Hojbjerg as well there should be plenty. Although have to be careful not to overpay for the sake of it. Just get the right players for Ange for a more quality depth of squad. I think centre back should be where the majority goes though.

I think you’ve got the right idea. Once I’m done driving people around this afternoon I’m gonna get pissed.

Get ready for drunk Tucker folks. He’s even more of a prick.

It's not that they will suddenly produce. Son, Richarlison and Maddison have all proved they can score double figures in the Premier League. Kulusevski scored about 6 in his first half-season, I think.

Why not judge them on last season? Becase last season was a mess. We arguably shouldn't have bought Kulusevski if we are judging by last season and Romero should be on the transfer list. I would prefer to give players the benefit of the doubt. And anyway, if we are buying from abroad for example, it's a risk that the new player will settle and replicate his form in the Premier League.

Sorry, I disagree. There aren't very many players in world football who would cost more than £100 million.
Have you not noticed the crazy money being spent and quoted this week?
Plenty of players are being valued around £100m just this week alone.

Son being made captain is just romantic. I don’t see captain material in him, yeah he might be for the national team, doesn’t make it right that he should be for us. A great servant and a lovely bloke, but he isn’t a captain on the pitch.

He is well liked by all the dressing room - that is key for me

Going slightly against the grain here but I do believe we will spend a good chunk. Lloris & Hojbjerg are also close to leaving and then we need to shift 4/5 more to trim the squad. Who we will bring in I'm not 100% sure, but Levy will know the pitchforks will be out if he doesn't act very quickly. There is no way he doesn't bring in a couple more by UTD, otherwise the atmosphere could be toxic in our opening home game of the season.
He really doesn’t give a f**k!

If it's a choice between Son and Bissouma for captain it highlights the absolute state of our squad and its lack of leaders.
